Less and Less 406's for sale?

Post by Bailes1992 »

As you all know I'm currently window shopping and preparing to get a HDi 110 Executive or SE...

About 2-3 months ago I was shifting though HUNDREDS of Execs and about 150-200 SE's on Autotrader...

Now theres about 10 Execs and 6 SE's and about 4 out of 6 SE's are Automatics?

Where have they all gone?

Aint it always the case!!!!!

A few months ago when we first had a few quid come through there was no 2.2hdi estates
Ended up spending most of the money on the new bathroom and bedroom, and now there is a few 2.2 estates in exec and se guise and haven't "quite" got enough to buy, especially after paying out the £330 for the clutch

i always thought there was fewer execs about isnt it a limited edition?, when i was buying mine there was only another 3 on at the same time, 2 were v6's, and the other was a hdi with over 200k on the clock.

There were a few down my local scrappy due to the scrappage scheme. Bloke said they were all 100%, but he wasn't allowed to put them back on the road. Apparently throwning out perfectly good stuff saves the environment

'05 RenaultSport Clio 182 Cup, 111k.

406s tend to come and go in waves. When I was looking mine they were thin on the ground, which is why I ended up with a bit of a lemon.

They will get rarer and rarer as time goes on. There are hardly any Xantias now, and no ZXs.

As for scrappage

Loads of classics scrapped so people can get a couple of grand towards a Hyundai i10.

Some dealers did recognise classics and bought them themselves for the scrappage amount.

At one BMW dealer, they took a Triumph Mayflower in part exchange for a 116i. They had no hesitation in scrapping it. Typical yuppie "if it isn't brand new and trendy it's worthless" attitude.

Absolute shame.

Here's one for Bailes:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1998-PEUGEOT- ... 19c87248bc

Sh*tty feedback record, but if you read into it properly, he's probably not as dodgy as it suggests. £875 may seem overpriced for a D8, but he'll probably take an offer & there aren't many around with sensible miles these days. Plus the fact that it's a 2.1 means that Sam can appease his tinkering side by doing the Bosch conversion to make it a chipmobile.

Honestly, I think that it's a good buy. The only thing that stops me going for older stuff now is my private plate, otherwise I'd probably look at old TDs & Mondeos & early 90s Beemers & Mercs.

I'd much rather this...
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/ ... ?logcode=p

Start off with a 1.9TD with the semi ecu controlled bosch.
Then put the VP40 pump off the 1.9 onto the 2.1. That way I have no immob issues, I keep the electronic advance, I keep my rev counter above 3000rpm and my engine management light stays off.

Even more so, I keep my cable clutch which means I can fit a 306 HDi gearbox with a cable clutch.

But I'm aiming abit higher...

that is one mint looking se, perfect in every way apart from the auto, id have a 2.2 automatic but the 2.0 auto is just a bit too slow.

Thing is it's only 4 speed which means massive gaps between gears and less MPG. Ok it would be far better with a remap but can the box handle it?
The only SE 110's on autotrader at the moment are automatics. I hope that changes when I go to buy!

4 speed auto in a 2.0, surprisingly quick but just drinks the fuel.

I think I could live with an Auto if I ended up with an SE as miont as the one I posted a link too.
But can the box handle a remap? I'd think another 40bhp must bring it down to about 10s 0-60?

i think i'd be a bit cautious of remapping an automatic - they don't seem to need many excuses to foul up and it's not like you can just stuff a manual box in there these days. you'd probably need to get a map that's meant for an automatic anyway.
