The Firenza's & Carlton look the business, but I'm sure there were lots more modern vehicles when they used to run in the 90s. Seems to be a lot of 70s stuff in that Mallory field.

I believe the Thundersaloons that ran in the 80's and 90's up till 95 evolved from the Super saloons that ran in the 70's
Hence why some older machinery also

I was hoping to see some of the latter cars myself

I know that there was a number of Manta's running, the Welcome Break Vauxhall Belmont, I know that there was definately 2, but possibly 3 Peugeot 309's running, A Honda Accord, numerous Sierras, Mitsubishi Starions, plus I remember loads of Toyota Starlets that used the 2.4l Manta 400 engine, plus an Opel Monza, Rover SD1's, a Jaguar XJ220 engined Escort, Mazda RX7, a 205 T16,

Sounds like a good day out!

Carlton looks the business. Was there someone who raced a Holden in BTCC?

I know someone raced a Merkur XR4Ti in BTCC.

I'll be watching that with interest as it'll give me a good indication of what I could expect to get for mine in a private sale. Trade in is probably £1000 tops.
£920. Doesn't bode well for mine with only 3000 less miles. Still seriously considering the change though.

Still don't know what I want though. So far my shortlist (or not so short-list) is:

one of the £3k 2.2 estates linked to earlier

2.2 607 - but insurance is even more hideous on those & can you imagine how reliable all that extra equipment would be?

2.2 C5

But with all of the above I'd have to budget for the deFAP.

Another 5 Series or 3 Series - but not many come with folding rear seats to carry long items in the boot

Mondeo - ST200, ST24 or another RS kitted Ghia X

Mk 3 Mondeos - but difficult to avoid the rusty door syndrome unless you go post 2005

Zafiras

Even Mk 3 Vectras

Omegas

I know there's this whole thing of "better the devil you know" & the amount of time & money I've put into mine, but there are some things that I'm never going to get from mine like the cruise control or the extra power of the 2.2.

Exact same colour as mine too. Am very tempted towards the 2.2 engine, but that one has a fair few more miles than mine does. Would be nice to get another one under 90k. That's why I'm very tempted to look at the red GLX that's in Southampton or the silver Exec in Cannock. By getting another 406 I can at least make use of some of the masses of bits I've got now, but I am also very tempted by the C5 (there's a blue SX hatch in Fordingbridge). That suspension would be a godsend with the speed bumps where I live & I don't think there are too many deFAP 180bhp ones yet - assuming it would be the same as deFAPping a 406 with ECU connections etc.

I think it's vanishingly unlikely a 406 ecu file would work on a C5 - the engine may be the same, but it's got to integrate with a different BSI, immobiliser, speed sensor, gearbox, steering, suspension? You could no doubt de-FAP it for next to nothing, but remap is something else.
I could be wrong, but it's an expensive gamble.

Understand your feelings on mileage, but bear in mind mine's on 160k and it's still as fit as a butcher's dog.

I'd be happy enough with the deFAPped standard for the time being as I could always get the extra power from a pro later.

Brilliant. You just don't get beige cars anymore...
From back in the days when you could have a 3rd row of seats & still use the boot. If memory serves, I think the 505s were actually 8 seat as well with 3 seats in the rearmost row.

Well, no.

1). It's a bit too soon for me, the dogmobile 'owes' me another 12-14 months, unless I can swap for a balance of < £1k.
2). In all liklihood, this joker paid about £1800 for it & it's certainly not worth £3k to me.
3). While I like the updated appearance of the SE, a bit of me thinks it's kinda poverty spec next to an exec.
4). I appreciate this is a very personal view, but it's BLACK, (which is almost as bad as white) & definitely worse than a root canal filling, without the anesthetic.

£1800 is probably about right. When it comes to traders/dealers what you have is always the wrong spec/colour/mileage etc. until they come to sell it. Some poor guy probably went in there with his cherished low mileage SE & got told, "well if it wasn't the 2.2. Nobody wants them with the particle filter, & black isn't a good colour... etc. blah, blah. I suppose I could give you £1200..."

It is a bit less well equipped than an Exec, but I always thought it was Peugeot's version of what Ford then started doing by creating the Titanium models as a "youthful" version of the Ghias. Besides, the updated appearance of the SE is also found on an Exec of the same age.

Having seen & driven it, I reckon the Dogmobile has a fair bit of life left & by the time it goes, you'll either be able to get a cheap last of the line 406 or something totally different that'll take your fancy.

Cracking! One of those cars that you used to see all the time, and now as rare as hens teeth. A proper big Pug saloon!

The old man's BMW is a gold colour but is registered on the V5 as beige :?:

Uncle had a Renault 21 Savanna that was 7 seats and a decent boot, room for a dog and all. The only problem was you were facing the wrong way on the rearmost seats, and getting in and out of a boot wasn't the most dignified way of entering or leaving a car.
