Re: Passat 4motion TDi?
The TDi in the Bora and the Passat is the same engine is it not?
As also seen in Octavias etc. and blowing a turbo in an Ibiza.

Re: Passat 4motion TDi?
Best VAG stuff is Fabia vRS, Seat Ibiza Cupra PD160, Leon Cupra-R 225, Leon Cupra/FR PD150, Octavia vRS petrol and diesel, Superb mk1 and mk2. You only need to look at the customer satisfaction surveys like JD power/warranty index etc to see which is the top VAG brand for relibaility, value for money, build quality - Its not Audi, VW or Seat either.

Re: Passat 4motion TDi?
Only reason I'd go for something like this over a 406 is simply for the AWD system.

Each time he's had to fork out £500 for a single injector. I told him his fancy German barge was too complicated and he should buy an old French heap instead. He didn't seem to see the funny side

Re: Passat 4motion TDi?
They're not actually 4wd in the way we'd like to think, they 'become' 4wd only if the front wheels loose grip so other than driving on wet mud or snow it's pretty much a FWD car 99% of the time. I believe VAG's use a Haldex system which can be troublesome? I like 4wd cars but you must keep well on top of maintenance like changing the fluids in the transfer box and diff's and other stuff like mounting bushes/bearings all need looking after.
Having said this it would be a nice thing to have if our winter's continue the way they have been

The panda 4x4 is also like that and it's amazing off road.Welly wrote:They're not actually 4wd in the way we'd like to think, they 'become' 4wd only if the front wheels loose grip so other than driving on wet mud or snow it's pretty much a FWD car 99% of the time. By the way most people buy 4x4 to go on the snow then they buy cheap chinese winter tyres... my 406 with high quality winter tyres will be better on the snow than any 4x4 with cheap tyres.
So, if you plan to go for a 4x4 then calculate both the additional maintenance cost and the cost for 4 decent winter tyres, with chains if necessary. If you just don't want to spend loads on tyres then get a 406 and spend the difference in decent tyres:
- goodyear ultragrip 8
- dunlop 4d
- conti t830p
are the best in the 205/55/16 dimension for around 110 euros (ca. 95 pounds) each here (adac and tcs tests). Then there are the pilot alpin but they cost 50 pounds more each.

My brother drives one of these - the engine is a total monster (and his is modified), but basically it's a Golf, but with a Seat body shell on it. The interior is made of lightweight rattly plastic.406loon wrote:Leon Cupra-R 225

Actually both Passat and A4 which I've posted links to are constant all wheel driveWelly wrote:They're not actually 4wd in the way we'd like to think, they 'become' 4wd only if the front wheels loose grip so other than driving on wet mud or snow it's pretty much a FWD car 99% of the time. Re: Passat 4motion TDi?
Which is actually worse - not only has it got all that extra weight, it's also got to drive all those components (at the wheel, as opposed to at the flywheel?). Most real 4x4s can turn one end off.Bailes1992 wrote:Actually both Passat and A4 which I've posted links to are constant all wheel drive
Btw I saw a Škoda Superb on the road today, I've seen a few about but they're generally hard to spot as they just look like an Octavia that's been eating too many pies, this one must be a new model because the rear end was completely different. The question is why did it look exactly the same size as the Jetta that was along side it?
Actually, today was quite nice being driven about because I wasn't in agony so I could look round and enjoy the scenery. I saw 2 accidents (first being a Freelander II sandwich), a Clio V6 (I bet they're fun but this one was lime green and so plasticky it looked like a designer vacuum cleaner). mind you, it won't look like that for long if he keeps cutting up lorries with it
