*** 2.0 Hdi turbo diesel wont start ***
Before i start, i apologise for my lack of knowledge, the problem is on my dads V Reg 406 Hdi 2.0 turbo diesel
And for what ever reason i cant tell you why, my dad has been running it abit low on fuel last couple of weeks, too the point where it ran out completely twice, it still ran after the first and second time, however the second time, it was running rough, it was described as sounding like it was running on three cylinders, we have just put a new fuel filter on it, and the fuel pumps are all working because we have fuel spurting out the injectors, my dad seems to think there is something wrong with one of the injectors, it tries to start but isnt sounding like its nearly there at all, if you get me
I dont know much, but will try and answer the questions that i know or ill ask my dad for answer

How does the lift pump sound when you put the ign on.
does it sound normal or is it noisey?
im refering to the pump that lives in the fuel tank,
if its been run dry this couid be worth checking

well, if that wasnt working, would there be fuel coming out of where the injectors are?? because there is fuel coming out where the injectors are, and what sound would e lift pump be making when working ??

you can only hear it when ignition on ready to start. as soon as you turn ignition on you hear a small buzz sound under your rear seats..
might be worth taking it out and testing it...

sounds like low/poor fuel delivery,
its most probs brought all the crap up from the bottom of the tank, with running it low on fuel,

another Q: when the fuel filter was changed, was this sealed correctly,?
iwouid double check, if its getting air in,
have you tried starting it up on sniff (easy-start etc) to see if that will pull the fuel through, ?

Ok cheers for your help lads, ill speak to my dad tomorrow, and ask/tell him everything you guys have said, and hopefully get some more answers, process of elimination

i had ur symptoms-turned out to be high pressure injector pump. check in fuel filter for swarf(bits of metal),as the pumps lubricate with diesel & are prone to not liking running dry.

Right, ive spoken to my dad and he seems to think that the number one injector is jammed open, says that the pumps are all working and that it is getting fuel to the injectors, what you all think to that?? hes talking about getting the number one injector refurbed and then thinks itll be ok :/ can any body shed some light on this

Well fuel is getting through the injector, so this had led to him thinking its jammed open and not doing its job correctly, when we try and start it, its turning over but doesnt sound like its firing at all, soo not really starting, or any where near tbh :/

Iwouidnt be condeming any of the injectors,
that dosent sound like a injector problem to me,
id say the problem is elsewhere,

Being an Hdi insn't the fuel at the injectors under high pressure and therefore it's not advisable to try and run the engine with the unions cracked? It can't be cambelt as that drives the high pressure pump and there is fuel at the injector.
1999 406 HDi 2.0 110 GTX Estate. 48k when bought, now 150K. Second owner, I've covered over 100k in it.
Clutch changed @110k, bottom pulley changed, cam belt changed, EGR blanked, cat removed, front springs changed.
