CHEAP ENGINE OIL 10W40

Post by marco2002 »

Hi Everyone

Noticed the other day that asda have their own brand 10W40 semi synthetic oil for 10 quid on rollback (5Litres) its usually about £17.00. Has anyone ever used this stuff and is it any good. My only concern is i bought some cheap oil from GSF a couple of years ago and it made the 406 sound like a tractor the tappets sounded a lot more noisy got fed up with the noise and i switched back to the normal stuff quick as it was quieter. The cheapest engine oil i can get round here is over 20 quid. There is someone on ebay selling total quartz for £20 and free postage so that may be the best option? Any ideas or advice appreciated. Thanks

Look at the spec on the label if it reads ACEA A3/B3 API SL CF then it's good enough.

I purchased a trolly load of Asda diesel mineral oil 15w-40 for use in my 405. I got it on special offer at 50p per 1L bottle. I do oil changes every 3,000 miles due to WVO use. The oil is supplied by Halfords who make very reputable oils. I've never had a problem with it in the 30,000+ miles I've been using it. If an oil is "diesel" spec, then the base oil that it's made from has to meet a higher quality requirement than that of general oil. Even if it were of lower quality, then the main difference is that it won't stay within specification for as long as a more expensive oil with more sophisticated additives. There is a school of thought that using a cheaper oil changed more frequently is better than using an expensive oil with extended intervals.

It won't cause a problem, just change it every 6,000 miles. Like you would any other oil ;)

But the engine might be a little louder and tap a little more. One way to find out?

I always been a lover of cheap ass 10w40 Semi synth and change it all the time (3,000 miles in my 406 on veggie).

But if you want a smoother and quieter engine a more expensive oil is the way to go. But you should still change it every 6k/6 months in my opinion.

Oil these days is usually suitable for petrol and diesel engines.

One thing you have to watch out for (well, I do as I have to service all kinds of vehicles) is the special oils for use with DFP equipped vehicles and the correct spec for VW/Vauxhall/Ford.

Hi

Just bought the asda engine oil the specs are the same as my regular engine oil so. The oil only stays in there for 6000 miles which is about 12wks at the moment. I'll let you know if the engine sounds more noisy. But at £10 for 5 litres its pretty cheap. If i was only doing 8,000 miles a year i'd stick with the dearer oil. Looks like i'll be doing 18 - 20k this year.

Not at all!
Oil has different qualifications, much like petrol.
The difference is comes when the oil gets very hot, how does it break down?
How well does it keep the engine clean?
How long is it's 'Life'?

Lots of factors on oil, just change it regularly and you won't have a problem.

Go for 10w40 Semi Synthetic.
Start using fully synthetic oil in an engine thats used semi synth all it's life and it will leak forever more!

I thought it was something along the lines of if you've been using mineral oil for many years and suddenly stick synthetic in your engine, the extra detergents will pick up all the deposits in the engine and clog oilways and stuff - this one hogswil too?

Then there's using an engine flush in an old engine and finding all the crap that it flushes out was what was stopping it leaking oil - hmm, I guess it's possible :?

There's also rubbing a piece of meat on a wart and burying it in the garden under a full moon...
