Clutch and cambelt change

Post by leestudd30 »

Morning all, just joined this morning!

I'm going to look at a P plate 2.0 GLX saloon tomorrow. It has 126k on the clock, no history but 5 months tax and text. It does look spotless from the outside on the pictures I've seen and the dealer has assured me there is no rust on the bodywork, unlike my Vectra B! Can anyone give me an idea of how much it would cost to replace the cambelt and clutch. When I googled cambelt replacement I saw some silly prices around 99-130 quid! How many miles would a clutch roughly last? And lastly, when should a cambelt be changed anyway and and how often should the car be serviced? The engine is a XU10 J4FR. Cheers

I don't have the cambelt change interval data for that model of engine, but for my 2.2 EW12 J4 engine, it was 80,000 miles or 8 years (whichever comes first). If in doubt, change the belt.

I also don't know how long a clutch should be expected to work, as I've never had to have a clutch changed on any of my cars (2x Mk.1 Clios (both of which were around 14 years old when I had them), 1x 406 LX 1.8 saloon (9 years old when I got it, kept it til it was 11), 1x 406 SE 2.2 Coupe (nearly 10 years old now)).

Clutch on a 2.0 should last until around 200k provided it hasn't been towing

Thanks for that! I'd seen figures for belt changes from 30k, 72K and 50K! Compared to my Vectra B V6, is a cambelt replacement a fairly simple job? Cheers for the clutch too!

Thanks for that! When I googled it I saw cambelt changes at 30k, 50k and 72k! Can anyone advise if its an easy job, say compared to my Vectra B V6? Cheers for the clutch info, should have some life in it!

The 406 cambelt change, will be a doddle compared to the Veccy,
iirc you had to move the engine over on the v6 ones to get enough room to change the cambelt ,

none of that polava with the 406

Yeah on the 406 you've just got to drop the V6 out the car after stripping half the engine bay...

Lucky for me, I found an old bill with the cars paperwork for a cambelt and water pump change that was done about a year ago!

Just had a price through from my local garage for cambelt change, £305 + vat, sounds a bit steep to me, the vectra cost me about £350 the last belt change it had.

Not a terrible price for a belt change. Mine was more than that, and included the belt, idler kit, and the water pump.

Try being a V6 owner - I've seen them pay upwards of £600 for their belt changes
