Rear Suspension Clunk over bumps
My rear suspension makes a clunking noise over large-ish bumps, mainly at slow speed - I think it's the drivers-side.
There don't appear to be any issues on even ground, even a speed much as the motorway.
It doesn't feel to be that much of an issue but concerned it'll be an MOT fault and would rather sort the problem now.
Can anyone advise on what might be causing the problem, I'm a total newbie to but would like to fix this if possible.
Feel free to ask any further information.

Re: Rear Suspension Clunk over bumps
There are various bits and pieces that can wear on the rear suspension, but the first port of call are the rear drop links. These are the plastic bars that connect the roll bar to the hub assembly. Pop the wheel off and give it a firm tug and see if there's any play. If there is, that's your problem. Luckily they are easy and cheap to replace.

Re: Rear Suspension Clunk over bumps
I'd suggest an even easier first port of call - the exhaust mounts. Rubber lumps with two holes in - one hole for a hook in the body and another hole for a hook on the exhaust. Piece of cake to find and change, and only a few quid.

Other thing to check is the antirollbar bushes.
To be honest if you're going to be sorting it yourself I would replace the ARB bushes, ARB drop links and the top stabiliser rods as they all wear out, especially if cheapies from ebay were last fitted!

Re: Rear Suspension Clunk over bumps
No luck guys. Took the wheel off and no sign of damage (apart from a rusting disk)!
Same with the exhaust, looked around and gave everything a good shake but couldn't spot anything. I'll have another play tomorrow and attempt to report further information.
Cheers.

Another thing to check is the lower arm rose joint bushes. Jack the car up and grasp the wheel firmly and see if you can rock from side to side or up and down. I had exactly the same thing, I thought it was a knackered wheel bearing at first. These are a pain in the arse to change unfortunately.

AH.
this sounds familiar,
only took me 6mths or so to find the clunks on my old 406.
Re: top links, how did you check them,
did you check them with the wheels off the Ground ?
if so check them again with the wheels on the ground,

Re: Rear Suspension Clunk over bumps
I'm no suspension expert, but whatever's in 3 (shock absorber?) looks well past its best

Re: Rear Suspension Clunk over bumps
That's the shock dust cover. Mine are at least as bad, but the actual shock is just fine.

Re: Rear Suspension Clunk over bumps
Hi, I have had the same problem with the clunking over bumps. I have just replaced the rear shocks, drop links and stabilzer bars. The clunk is not as bad by far, but whilst doing it I found that the bush in the hub was not very good, so that is the next thing on my list ( I'm sure that will sort it all together ) hope this helps
Re: Rear Suspension Clunk over bumps
The lower rose joint bush, you'll have fun with that

And the rear drop links wear! Replaced both on my car - quiet as!
