What's the history of the car? When did you start having this problem? I have a 2.1 so I'll try and help you out as much as I can.

It's had no work done to it except oil changes etc. Only has 80,000 on clock. It won't try to fire even if I pump primer.

The 2.1 doesn't have one.

My 2.1 came with 3 keys, sometimes it wouldn't start and I eventually realised that one of the keys lacked a transponder chip and I was using 2 sets of keys...

How many keys did you get with yours? I suppose it's possible for a transponder chip to just die.

Have a look on BBA - http://www.bba-reman.com/auto-mine/prob ... px?make=20

Failing that there's no point in us guessing, you need some diagnostics.

i would say that you have a fuel proplem as i dont think it would run on east start if it was electrical[but i could be wrong]
i would check the fuel filter[4 allan key bolts] and replace if dirty,if that is good then undo a injection pipe to see if you getting fuel there when you crank the engine.
where are you as someone might be near you to help?
also how much fuel is in the tank and is it parked on level grond or on a hill?

i'd second the fuel problem, maybe glow plugs, are there any bubbles in the fuel lines, check the fuel filter, loosen the injector nuts to see if you have fuel there, from experience the 2.1 likes to wait until the glow plug light goes out before you start it.
406 estate, 2.1TD, I fixed her, then part exchanged her for a Mercedes E300TD Avantgarde Estate.
