Snow tyres are usually more noisy. That said, my new Goodyears are much more silent than the Michelins I had before.

M+S means mud + snow, but it's stated also on some non-properly snowy tyres, such some all-seasons.
You have to double check the thread block design to assure they are snow tyres. Snow tyres have splits all over the blocks. These splits collect snow, which sticks to the snow on the road and actually make grip. So it's the snow on the tyre which makes grip with the snow on the road, not the tyre itself.

here is an example of one such advert:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHFKE6PD_6U

but about the tyres, i looked there at the car;
the front has pirelli p6000 195/65/r15 91h, they were bought at the same time
the rear right is a Michelin radial x 195/65/r15 91h, this came from the scrapyard off the back of a fairly new citroen berlingo which had the front end smashed into shite.
the left rear is a maxis map1 195/65/r15 91h, this is the spare wheel which came with the car now on the alloy, the spare itself is flat and another maxis, i suppose i could change these two for good michelins.
But as for road noise the pirellis up front are still not a problem.

Here it is illegal to have two different tyres on the same axis.

Iozz, I wouldn't touch energys with a ten foot pole, watch out when it's wet, it's like going on the ice if they are more than 1 or 2 year old.

REMEMBER, TREAD IS NOT THE ONLY THING THAT MATTERS, AGE OF A TYRE DOES TOO! RUBBER GETS OLD!

are they different tyres though, they are all 195/65/r15 91h although different brands.

i remember my uncle when he got the shogun it cost £500 to replace all the tyres because they were all cracked from it sitting around.
Though it cost about the same the time one of the tyres on the back of the tractor burst when it run over a steel rod sticking out of the ground, although the fitter comes out and puts it onto the tractor which is nice.

I want some winter tyres now

'Mytyres' are doing a set of new steelies + tyres for mine for £650.00 - that'll be just the ticket before christmas

I thought these tyres were really noisy and kinda temporary but watching that there video says it all.

Might have to source some steelies from the scrapper and maybe get the tyres over the course of next year to spread the cost...........at which point it'll probably never snow again

My car had a twitch yesterday at 06:00am on a country lane and it brought Mr Welly into a new kind of 'awakeness' on the way to work  (doing 55mph down hill on 'suddenly noticed' ice, heading for a bend, with the car going light and squirmy).

I bought mine brand new off a guy on pistonheads before the last snow but when i looked on camskill, blackcircles etc they had all sold out,a mate of mine who runs a tyre company told me apparently that the main tyre importers only buy in a certain amount of different brands and sizes for the winter period and when there gone there gone untill the following year.

Most French cars (but not only) use Michelin Energy as standards. The old model is crap in all situations, brand new or old, especially on the wet. This is proved by all tests.
The newer model is better, still weak on the wet but definitely better. But after 1 or 2 years, like all low and mid range michelins, they become very hard and unusable on the wet. This is my personal experience, confirmed by many friends and even by some tyre fitters.
when I had to but the winters, I went to some. all of them tried to sell me Michelins, I then told them I didn't like them and why, and in the end they agreed they are crap. One of them told me it's the brand they make more money out of each tyre sold, that's why they try to sell them to everyone.
You'll hear many horror stories about those tyres on the net if you search for.
On italian car forums it's full of threads about these tyres.

Had 2 tyres fitted to the front last week , i know they are not snow tyres
but thought i would give them a mention as never used them before. They
are Kenda KR26's , since having them fitted i've driven on dry , damp , wet
roads and the grip has been very good , did a round trip to wetherby on saturday
and they were very quiet on the motorway :)
