LEAKING SUMP PLUG 53 HDI 110, REPAIR OPTIONS

Post by ian361 »

Recently changed the oil on my 53 plate 406 hdi 110 and the plug no longer tightens and is continually dripping oil. Car has had a few oil changes in its 258,000 miles so i imagine the thread is going on the sump. Does anyone know if there are any reapir kits available or is it a visit to machine shop???

Might try the bodge if the leak gets any worse, leaving a bit of a patch everytime i park it.
Will need to find a permanent solution when the weather warms up!

Thanks for the welcome!

Helicoil sounds good, any idea how long it would take?

Yes! Helicoil is the way to go, you can buy kits for this.

A good temporary repair would be to squirt loads of instant gasket around the plug and in the threads....drain the oil into a clean container and clean up the plug and sump first, use brake cleaner.

To be honest i've never used one but my mate runs a garage and quite often works on old cars with stripped ally threads in casings etc and they work well for him,i know he's used them on spark plug threads so they must be strong.
