hi and a merry christmas to all,

Quick question, looking at a 307 1.6 HDI 110 estate for my girlfriend as she had her multipla written off a few weeks back by a white van man

A local dealer has a very tidy 307 on the forecourt (it's also listed on ebay if you want a look) for 3 grand (probably knock that down a bit), 54 plate, 75,000 miles and full peugeot service history.
Price looks very good compared to similar cars on autotrader but wanted to check if anyone new of things to look out for?

The 1.6 engine should be fine for the 50-60 miles a week she does and the 45mpg and cheap tax are very appealing, also being the estate it has plenty of room in the boot.

Interior is imaculate, a few scratches in the paint, broken clips on the drivers door bump strip and a ding on the bumper (easy fix)are the only obvious faults on the bodywork.

Not had a chance to drive it yet but the 110 engine should pull well in a car that size so it should be fairly obvious if it's fooked??

The guy said on the phone it will be serviced before it's sold and I'll try and get the bumper and bump strip fixed at the same time. I might push for an early cam belt change if he'll do it in with the price

Any opinions/comments/previous experience with the 307 or the 1.6 engine??

DPF problems, DMF problems and more electrical problems than your average Peugeot.
Engines are supper laggy off boost and have to be worked pretty hard.
I'd say go for the older 2.0 HDi 90 without a DMF or DPF.

I heard somewhere that the 1.6 110 suffers badly from turbo failures.

I feel your pain there, that's what happened to my old 406 saloon. I'm hoping that your particular WVM had the decency to stop and exchange insurance details etc with you? Mine f*cked off leaving nothing, and I got squat as a result.

Iknow someone whos got a 307 hdi,
theyve never had aproblem with it, and its not reguarly serviced,

my guess is, there just like any other car, you either get a good en or a bad en its pot luck,

How can people Genuarly give horror stories on a car theyve never owned, that baffles me,
it abit like Rover ihear people saying theyre crap and they blow up but when iask if theyve owned one they say no, ( case closed )

I have driven a Volvo C30 1.6D (Same engine) and it was laggy as hell until about 2.5k when it shot off like a rocket. I can't see this being any good for the engine or fuel economy!

Then fords with the 1.6TDCi engine (also same engine) have nothing but turbo issues!

Much better off with the bullet proof 2.0 HDi personally.

Or if you go for a new 2.0 HDi you will have 16v, 138bhp and a 6 speed gearbox

Well you pays your money you takes your choice.
307s seem to be available with 4 different diesel engines:
2.0 110 band E, group 8
2.0 90 band E, group 6 <<< I'd be after one of these.
1.6 110 band E, group 6
1.4 (70 hp) band C, group 4E

The 1.6 is very under-powered -- the claimed 110HP doesn't arrive until 4000rpm. Up to 2000rpm the 2.0 HDi 90 produces more than twice as much power and twice as much torque.

My Wife has a 206 1.4 hdi estate ,same ilk as 1.6 hdi,and yeah turbo failures are common on these engines when oil changes are neglected due to carbon build up in turbo feed pipe.the oil capacity is around only 3 litres so oil is working hard..
That said our 206 had full history, and i change the oil every 8k,and it has 163,000 on clock and has never had any problems (incl turbo which is still original )and runs great.
£30 road tax per year, avrg 64.3 mpg!! and she wont use 5th gear..silly moo...cos shes scared of going from 5th to reverse!!!
Dunno about 307 1.6hdi, but ours has no dual mass flywheel and no part. filter..later ones im told had part. filter.ours is 03 reg'd.
I took it to London last week and cruised at 80 and it was surprisingly quiet,lowing reving almost like my 406 2.0 hdi i was really impressed tbh! did miss the leather heated seat comfort and armrest tho

Thanks for all the responses, it's got a full pug service history and 75,000 miles in 7 years isn't exactly high mileage so for what she needs it's a serious contender. It will mainly be for commuting which is 30 all the way for her so out right power isn't a particular issue.
We've got a test drive on tuesday so we'll take it from there.

WVM took full responsibility and she's got a cheque on it's way for £2,500.

I've got to say £10 a week on fuel and £115 a year road tax is very tempting if it runs well.
She was only putting 4000 miles a year on her last car so a 12 month service should hopefully be all it needs for a few years, (I think I said that when I bought a 406 doh!!!)

You don't want a diesel for that sort of commute, it will take forever to get warm which will nacker the engine up sooner or later. And then you have the DPF which will get clogged too.

Well we went for a test drive yesterday and I've got to say it handled well and had a good bit of pick up, (couldn't push it too hard with the salesman in the car).
Shook hands and pick it up friday.
Car comes with 6 month warranty (including turbo, DMF in fact pretty much everything but wipers and tyres), it's a third party warranty that can be extended to 2 years for about £130.

It will have a 12 month ticket on it when we pick it up, full service and cam belt change if it hasn't been done already, if it doesn't need it he's knocking £200 off the price.
It's booked in at the body shop to have a scuff and some trim sorted.

All in all I'm very pleased, a 54 plate with 73,000 miles for £3000 (£2800 if the cam belt doesn't need to be done)

I did check the 2.0 litre 90 figures and the tax is more, insurance is more and the MPG's are a fair bit lower, with the warranty on the turbo, DMF and DPF I'm not to concerned, regular servicing should keep the turbo happy, a day trip once a month should keep the DPF clear and the DMF would probably have dies by now if it was going to.

I take the point about using a petrol for short journeys but you add 50% on to your running costs, but a blast down a dual carriageway/motorway once a month should get her up to temp and clean up any deposits. Plus I could change oil and filters myself for £40 every 6 months once the warranty expires and still save a packet over a petrol.
