Dog

Post by plod »

I'm sure of you on here are into your dogs

And looking into the idea of getting a dog

I've not had a dog for over 25 years since I was at school
My wife's parents have always had dogs, and my wife really wants to get one and is trying to persuade me

We both work full time, but I thought I could take the dog with me to work and out in the lorry - i've been at drops before and seen other drivers with dogs with them
I need to lose weight big time, so having a dog means having to go on walks, and as such could really help me out.

As a newbie to the concept of having a dog, can anyone offer any good advice

Think the misses would like a collie or a labrador - i'm not into the idea of a status dog, and anytime a staff has licked me, it's brought me out in a rash which may be a coincidence with the ones that have licked me, but not keen to find out as I class that as a status dog also.

I should imagine it's a case of having a dog to your level of commitment - not wishing that to sound wrong, but in the sense in that, no point having a dog that needs exercising 3 times a day if you're not prepared to do it
and being careful of breeds with inherant problems - i.e. I know some breeds have breathing difficulities just because they've been bred a certain way

Thinking along the lines of getting pet insurance if we get a dog for those unexpected vet bills - is this a good idea???

Anyway, more in a bit, oven is beeping at me, as I make tea saturday night

Hi mate,

Having adog is good fun,
But you have to pick what kind of dog you want carefuly do some Research,
if you want something to travel with you in the cab, The Jack russel is the wagon drivers best mate imho

if you want a dog you can excercise with look into greyhounds you can get very small greyhounds 8)

My mate who is a builder got himself a black lab,he is happy to go with him in the transit and sit there with no issues as long as he is let out to have a bit of exercise during the day and a decent walk in the evening.I have a setter and tried to take him to work with me but it didn't work as even if i left the van for 2 mins when i got back he greeted me like i'd been gone for a week with paper and docs flying all over the van,as for insurance i wouldn't be without it as he has been a bit of a sick dog over his lifetime and with one bill over a bank holiday weekend amounting to nearly £1400 i was glad of the insurance but having said that my previous setter lived to nearly 14 and didn't cost me hardly anything over his lifetime, horse for courses, just make sure the pup comes from a reputable breeder. As for weight loss my poor old dog has gone blind over the last 18 months and without the long walks i used to do i've put on over a stone so they do keep you fit when walking them. :)

Thanks guys

Misses likes Jack Russells so definately an option

Was looking earlier at some foxterrier/collie crosses but only 8 weeks old and had no injections yet, so I can't see that as being a good option, as my limited knowledge on the subject tells me they need injections at 8 weeks and again at 11 weeks and so couldn't go out for 4 weeks and with both of us in full time work makes that unviable

There weird jack russels,

if you blow in there face theyl bite you
but you see them with there heads sticking out of waggon windows enjoying the 40mph wind :?

as of injections and all that, its not expensive,
but if your looking for adog that comes with all its inoculations done already, the local dog pound is a good option for that
plenty of young dogs /pups end up there no fault of there own,

they will come with all the inoculations, and micro chipped and 1 mths pet insurance thrown in free
iwouid Bail one out of rescue centre before buying one elsewhere

plod i have a jack russell & a yorkshire terrier. both brilliant little dogs. not to messy like big dogs . mine are miniture ones
my uncle has a border collie. fantastic clever dog

my nan has a lancashire heeler another great small dog . altho very hyper when pups .

my mum use to breed boxer's . loved them but very very crazy even when old
now my mam has 3 jack russell's

ye lozz is right they can be little snappers jack russell's but mine is brilliant with kids we got it a pup from born so its being brought up with 3 children
on the other hand my mums do not like my kids and they can snap
it all depends on how they get brought up and what people they get brought up with

Funny you should mention the Staff thing. I have an 8 year old called Jack, every time I play about with him I have to wash my hands/arms or I come out in a rash.
In my house we're out all day, dog dosen't seem to mind it at all. We leave him have the house and he spends most of his day sleeping in his cage.

Thats another thing, cages are brilliant with dogs! Jack used to hate it when he was a puppy but he loves being in there now. He thinks it's 'his bedroom' so to speak.

The wife said she'd ideally no more than 3 years old

I've looked at a few rescue dog sites tonight, but wondered whether we'd meet criteria if we're at work all day

I know it's abit selfish but personally I'd ever only have a Pup. simply cause the way it's brought up can vary it's behaviour so much.
