Clutch

Post by tick73 »

when i press the clutch pedal,it releases as soon as start to press it (about 2 to 3 inches of travel).
does this mean that its near the end of its life? there is no slipping at all (yet)
its a 2 litre diesel (110), on a 51 plate.

how long do u think its got left?

and i heard that the price varies a lot, depending on where you get it replaced. and i dont really want to go to the dealer to have it replaced.

If you mean the clutch starts to 'creep' with the clutch pedal depressed then it sounds like the slave cylinder is faulty and is letting hydraulic fluid past it's seals.

Easy enough job to fix.

not to sure wot 'creep' is, so i couldnt say if it was that.

but im guessing as the friction plate wears down, the 'biting point' position on the clutch
will rise (hence now very little movement of the clutch pedal is needed to change gear)

so as the biting point is like this, will it continue to rise untill the point comes when i will lose drive
completly.

just wanted to know roughly how many miles left on it

Hm... well I had my car for 3 years and my biting point was always very high. I assumed my clutch was on the way out so I had it checked right after I bought. The mechanic said that all 406s with hydraulic clutches had a high biting point.

Did yours get progressively higher or was it always like that?

only purchased the car 2 weeks ago,so i couldnt say.

it could be that im not use to it.

suppose i will find out one day when i try and pull away and it just sits there.

what i wanted to know was, does it tend to go straight away or will it slip for a while?

The biting point on mine is very high, as is the pedal itself :|

The slightest touch on the pedal will almost disengage the clutch

If it's juddering or starting to slip under load then thats when it's knackered, my car was used as some sort of International Caravaning Competitive Sport for years

The clutch is slipping, but still useable, slips alot more when hot.
