Sticky Fuel gauge?

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Sticky Fuel gauge?

Post by Bailes1992 »

Another niggle I found on the 406...
If I park on a slope the fuel gauge will go up as usual. But it will not come back down again until I fill the car to the brim? :?

Anyone got any ideas?

My old 110 did this and so does my new one,it can be on 1/4 of a tank and i put 5ltrs from a can in it and it goes to just under 1/2 a tank and stays there,i think it's a 406 thing.I always keep a canfull in the boot now just in case.

Well I always brim my tank anyway, so aslong as I make sure I don't do more than ~500 miles without filling up I should be alright.
Lift pumps are onlye ~£150 new, maybe I'l replace it when I get my tax rebate in April.

its well worth keeping a jerry can full in the boot.

Mine behaves sensibly most of the time, just occasionaly lies, claiming there's about 1/4 tank less than the truth. I always brim it and always get > 600 miles / tank, so yours should do lots more, Sam, (unless you really are trying hard).

I have no intention of disturbing it unless the lift pump gets troublesome.

Mine says 670miles on a full tank, so if I fill it up every 500 I know I'm safe :)

I too always carry a can in the boot

Last week, the gauge said it was in the reserve, so put the contents of the can - about £6 in the tank, then something came up and decided to use my car to go to Exeter to get 3 little boxes as would of took me forever in the lorry - not something I intend on making a habit of, but made an exeption
Anyway, took just over £100 to fill  , I believe it was 70.63litres, despite the 4 odd litres i'd already put in around 3 mile previous

When I got back after 400miles, it said I had half a tank
Next day when I started it up to go to work, it said 3/4 of a tank, and when coming back from work it had just over a quarter

Done another hundred miles since then, and gauge is varying still between just over a quarter to just under half

The gauge on mine is like this! I haven't put than a half tank of fuel in since I bought it, I assumed that because it has a large tank the fuel is all over the place inside when driving up and down hills and round corners?

That and the tank is quite wide & flat, so hills etc have a bigger than average effect.
