there a few problems up front, its pulling to the left, the clunking noise, and the wear, now I'm on a spare tyre till the issue gets fixed, no point in ruining a new tyre quickly.
I blame the potholes in the roads round here

That could be track rod ends (like Gary said) and a drop link gone, your right these potholes and speedbumps are b$stards i noticed some nice new potholes on my journey this morning our roads just cant handle this snow.

I have a nice new set of drop links on my table ready to go on and they'll bloody well stay there until this weather warms a bit ... Not sure if i should do both or keep one as a spare?

Buy quality items - mate of mine had a set of ball joints crap themselves after 40k in his Xantia!

The cheap items are a false economy!

the mechanic looked at my car, he said the clunk is a drop link, and the wear is possibly due to the pressure being at 30 instead of his recommended 36.

I purchased two now droplonks this morning the drivers side one was in shite, the seal was wore off and the inside ball bit all corroded no wonder the noise was there.
I think the pulling to the left it needs the steering aligned, but i need to check the steering wheel is on straight it may have been put on a bit wrong when the com2000 was done.

Although the drop links have been replaced with QH ones its all that available from the motor factors.

Replaced both of mine the other day one was absolutely bolloxed and has only been on 9 months that was the drivers side too

So what actually goes wrong with them? I had assumed that they'd break in two, but in FP's drop link replacement guide it just looks like the rubber ends are a bit worn. Mine feel solid enough, but that's with the weight on them.

And what exactly is the noise? A sort of rumbling when you go over bumps? (I have a lot of that.)

They get Mechanical Arthritis

The ball part Rattles in the cup. cars like the 406 are abig heavy motor, so every time your car hits adip or hole in the road the drop link get pushed upwards , putting strain on the link , weakest point is the ball and cup of the link

the ball joint wears . just like all other ball joints and bushes on cars. thanks to todays crappy roads , speedhumps. potholes and just generaly the road itself. its crap

ive just ordered front links . had this 406 from december 2011, was going through a bookfull of receipts and found one for front droplinks. which is dated 2 years ago.

so that proves they do last if you drive well and avoid all those humps bumps and potholes along your way.

You get three different grades of car parts. Budget, OEM and Aftermarket.

Chances are most people are just replacing parts with Budget bits.

I fitted budget drop links on my 406 and they went after about 10 months. Bought OEM links and they were much more solid and a much heavier item. They were still on the car about 6/7months later with no play when we got rid of it.
