Steering rack query

Post by xxbernie »

Just posted this in the 'Newbie' section, but thought I best put it in here too......

My steering rack is leaking oil. I have identified the leak as coming out of the seal at the top of the pinion hydraulic motor where the steering linkage attaches. Now, I've had a scout round fleabay and on this site but everything comes as a complete unit (i.e. with the rack as well), but I don't know which type of rack I have fitted.

So, is there any difference in the pinion hydraulic motor across the range? If not, then I could buy any rack and just change the motor and throw the rest of the rack in a skip.

Any info hugely appreciated as my drive is getting pretty sh*tty and I need to stop this leak!! :cheesy:

i dont know what year your car is but there are a couple of diffrent types of rack.the diffrence is how the pipes fit into the rack one type the pipes screw into the rack, the other they are clamped in with a 10mil bolt.
i know this as i changed my rack a while ago,i think what you are saying would work as i was going to do this [as i got supplied the wrong rack] as everything else LOOKS the same.
the only way you will get that piece is if you get a 2nd hand rack as shops only sell racks on a exchange basis.

Bernie, no need to post multiple threads on the same subject.
I suggest you have a look at public.servicebox.peugeot.com (subscribe telling them you have a small garage, they do not check), the diagrams could sort you out. Then you may drop a mail to ade1122 (ebay or coupe' forum) for a repleacement part.

Service Box is useful to have, however the diagrams are fairly generic, so there's no guarantees that they actually represent the range of racks indicated by the part numbers.

It appears that your V6 has variable power steering and the good news is there can be only one. Unfortunately the diagram has no further breakdown as far as the pinion valve is concerned.

If it was me I'd get another rack off Ade and see if it came to bits, but I'd be cautious because any seals or gaskets would be hard to find and probably end up fitting the whole damn thing...

It's a bit different for a D9 as there's a different rack after 1999:
4000 HX STEERG GEAR ASY REP 60DHCE MARKING 60DHCE
- 4 DOORS SALOON/EST AND RIGHT HAND DRIVE UNTIL RPO 08393
REP 60DHCE - COUPE 2 DOORS AND RIG HAND DRIVE UNTIL RPO 08410

And the diagram really does show something different...

Many thanks for your speedy replies!

Just to clarify, my V6 is on an 'R'-plate and I think it was registered in 1998. I can tell you that the pressure lines that go from the pinion to the rack are of the flared type with a compression union and NOT the banjo bolt type. From what I remember (bearing in mind I'm away from the car during the week) the supply/return pipes from the reservoir are the banjo bolt type.

Looking at how the pinion is attached to the rack, it looks like it is only held on by 2 allen/torx bolts along with a generic gasket. There may be an o-seal in there but nothing I can't get hold of/make.

So with that extra info, is anybody the wiser as to whether these hydraulic motors are generic across the range and it's only the rack that differs?

Cheers!!

Great idea, but you're relying on Mrs. B to park the car over it without hitting it, breaking it, etc and then of course, actually get the car directly over the pan.......

......'Fraid it's jet wash and elbow grease for me!!!
