02 rad fan not working

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

02 rad fan not working

Post by madmadmax »

OK so I have been looking and investigating this fault all day so far I have found that I have 14v at the fan with the engine running, what I have read is that i should have near bat voltage at the fan if ecu says switch off.

all trig wires have connections and one has 5v at the loom connector, also I am struggling to fined the relays.

i have done all the tests with the engine temp sensor unplugged.

this is a 2002 hdi 110

You sure? Thats were they were on my old HDI110. Inside a black plastic box. The feed to the fan led to it. I'll check the new one when i can.

You've presumably got the 1253E4 the same as me.

My fan doesn't go even when you switch the aircon on or disconnect the feed at the coolant temp sensor. The main dealer said it was seized which is quite a common problem.

I have never had an overheating problem, even throughout the summer. The temp remains constant at 90.

They're in the engine fuse panel (the multiplex one :( )

Apparently the maxi fuses are underneath the fuse panel you see, according to a post I've been looking at over on the coupe club(http://www.406coupeclub.org/phpBB3/view ... y&start=50) you have to lever the fuse panel out & there they are. It's MF1 according to SEDRE.

ye i had a look at the maxi fuse box(the one under the main fuse box) and all seemed fine all clean the only thing i can think of now is an ecu fault but i don't wont it to be this.

I've noticed on mine that if you start the engine and switch on the aircon and give the rad fan a bit of a push with a screwdriver, then it does TRY to start. I'm hoping that the brushes are worn out

I've been quoted £210 for a replacement fan and it's a main dealer part only

Bushes or brushes? I managed to change the brushes on my D8's fans but they're not really meant to come apart.

The relays inside the fuse panel do go wrong and can be changed but it would probably be easier to get another fuse panel.

I'm not really surer what the relays are for, I could tell you on a D8. Service Box says they're different/not different (two listings, same part number) between petrol and diesel engines (but doesn't say what they do of course), so I suspect they're something to do with the engine, but the diagram I have is just a diagram - like the London underground tube map, it don't really look like that.
