Re: mpg
I'm curious how most people work out actual fuel usage on their 406's ? I used to brim the tank, run until the light came on then brim it again. Stopped doing that when it hit £90+, now it's 3 gallon at a time as it 'should' last me a weeks commute and I should get 110 miles out of it. I'm much more fuel concious with 1/4 of a tank than a full one with my driving style as well.
My fuel light seems to come on for a minute or 2 when she starts up if I'm getting close, then I get a true reading when she's warmed up a bit, it usually gains 1/8 of a tank.
I know it's 'actually' low when it stays on after 2 miles driving, then it's time for fuel, gotta love the 406 fuel gauge

The 2.0 Petrol is one of Peugeot's best kept secrets, they are very tough, very reliable and can withstand neglected services easily. Some would say that they are more reliable than the diesels.....jonesblakey wrote:i think i got lucky with this one.....only cost 475 and engine sounds mint and interior excellent for 1998 model....bit of rust outside but i think it was well looked after....cause now i said that summats bound to got wrong.....its got 622miles to do in april...fingers crossed

Re: mpg
My T plate D9 wasn't too bad. Used to get 25mpg around town & on a motorway trip to Birmingham with 3 passengers I hit 40mpg at a steady 70mph. Fuel economy nosedived any faster than that though. On another day with just myself in the car & going no faster than 85 it dropped to 28mpg. Was totally reliable though, & wasn't a slouch.Welly wrote: The 2.0 Petrol is one of Peugeot's best kept secrets, they are very tough, very reliable and can withstand neglected services easily. As mechanically reliable as a Swiss clock though - seriously, those petrol lumps are bullet-proof.
My 2.2 petrol has been pretty good too, engine-wise. Other than the usual oil/filters/spark plugs, and the routine 8 year/80,000 mile cambelt change, the only thing that has actually failed on my engine so far has been the alternator pulley, which sounded like ball bearings in a tumble dryer, and was busily munching away at my aux belt while it did it. No sweat since then though.

I think if you're on a budget and don't do many miles then the petrol 406 is the better bet, less to go wrong really

i've read on here about the 1.8 being underpowered but mine don't hang about when ya give it some jip. (although it is the biggest engined car i have owned)highlander wrote:My old 1.8 petrol waswaue1978 wrote:Was totally reliable though, & wasn't a slouch.not great at accelerating, but she would eventually get up to a decent speed if given a decent enough stretch of private disused runway.

you can really wind them round to the red line , and they dont bat an eye lid. mine returns 34-36 mpg depending on how much town driving i do.

Re: mpg
Prior to owning the 1.8 406, my previous two cars were both Mk. 1 Clios, the first being a 3-door 1.4 and the second being a 5-door 1.2, which was utterly gutless, so when I switched up to the 406 I thought a 1.8 would be superbly quick. And it was, in comparison. It was better than either Clio in absolutely every respect.kevtherev wrote:i've read on here about the 1.8 being underpowered but mine don't hang about when ya give it some jip. But most of my out-of-town driving was done on long, twisty single-carriageway A and B roads, where opportunities for overtaking are very few and very far between. As good a long-range cruiser as the 1.8 was, you needed to make a calendar appointment for overtaking. From 45 to 60 MPH seemed to take an age.
Switching up again to the 2.2 has opened my eyes to just how much better an engine can be, especially one that has 50 more HP than the old 1.8 did. Overtaking is effortless, even in fifth gear (but I still drop to fourth when overtaking on those roads just to hear the engine roar when I floor it - grin factor doesn't come close!)
Surprisingly, fuel economy hasn't suffered! The car doesn't struggle as much to maintain cruising speeds, and the 2.2 engine is designed to be economical. Typically I get about the same mileage per tank of fuel on the 2.2 Coupe than I did on the 1.8 saloon. The EW12 J4 is a superb engine, you can find it in the D9 version of the SRi Saloon or Estate (the D9 SRi interior is fantastic too!), but it's really (really!) rare in the Coupe.

Re: mpg
It's not unusual for more powerful versions of the same car to deliver comaparable consumption to their 'economy' siblings.
(The comparison tends to fall a bit flat if you exploit the extra ooomph though).
Love the new 'ranking' Graeme, when did that appear?
