That paint job brings back memories - the British Airways "World Tails" programme, where they painted the tails of their aircraft with a diverse selection of lovely ethnic artwork from around the world. Then Mrs. Thatcher deemed it evil and unpatriotic because the worldwide artwork was in place of the Union Jack. And to seal the deal, she draped a handkerchief over the tail of the model she was being shown just to hide it So gradually the tails disappeared.

The one you pictured, Welly, was "Waves and Cranes", the one from Japan, designed by Matazo Kayama. Looked like this:
