Dog legged 2nd?

Post by Bailes1992 »

Both my 406's seemed to have a really dog legged 2nd gear.

My current 406 is probably abit worse than my 1st 406.

2nd gear seems really far to the left compared to 1st gear?

You have to come out of 1st and push it even more to the left to get it in?

Anyone else noticed this?

It's like this...

My Coupe has the lift-select for reverse gear, so my box is laid out differently from yours.

Yours is laid out like my old saloon was, and as far as I remember it was pretty straight. Pull to the left and push forward for 1st, then pull straight back for 2nd, push straight forward and the spring/guide system will take you straight to 3rd, then pull straight back for 4th, then push forward and to the right a little to kick into 5th.

The Coupe box behaves exactly the same, except that to get to reverse, I have to pull up a ring just below the gearknob in order to be able to move the stick into the R position.

Same here, (though my old Xsara HDi 90 was like yours).

My gearbox is like this:

6-----R---2
3--1-4
--5....................N

Takes a bit of getting used to but it's ok.

Never driven an auto - why do you have a 1, 2, D3 and D4 setting? I get "Park", "Neutral", and "Reverse", but I thought the point behind an auto was that you put it in "Drive" and let the autobox sort the rest.

Is it something a bit like the "Snow" and "Sport" settings you get on the 406 Coupe V6's autobox? i.e. different selections for different driving conditions / driving styles?

1st and 2nd are supposed to be for snow, forces it into 1st and 2nd gear.

D3 is a 3 speed auto, supposedly for town driving. D4 is the 4 speed auto.
I usually keep it in D4 around town, as I hit 30 - 40 - NSL - 30 - 40 - 30 limits.

The Accord, being an American coupe, has no concept of sport. Just sort of wafts about and any performance is purely coincidental.
