Re: SAAB
I think it's because i'm paying over the odds for my 406, so compared to a standard 406 the saab would be higher, but compared to mine it's actually cheaper

Re: SAAB
ithink the early ones might be cheaper on insurance,
the one ilooked at is a s reg, so perhaps looking for an early one might be the way, perhaps k reg 1993 0r earlier,
the older ones seem to be going for daft money

Re: SAAB
I think the one I quoted on was a 52 plate, can't remember whether it had 230bhp or 250bhp, but seemed silly I can insure that cheaper than my 406 (declaring modifications)

Re: SAAB
Old boss has a 9-3 1.9 TiD, with the Alfa Romeo diesel engine.
Doesn't seem to have given him too much trouble other than an alternator.
Considered a hatchback-style 9-3 myself, but wasn't sure if I could trust GM parts. (though at the time the old man had a 180k mile vectra as a runabout that was still fairly solid!).
The problem for me is that Saab is now orphaned, I'd worry about parts but also in the back of my head it would annoy me that they aren't there anymore.

Re: SAAB
Parts supply shouldnt be a problem. Parts for MGs/Rovers are still about. Plus, more people drive Saabs so there is a demand for factories to churn out the bits, and most stuff is GM platform, parts = no problem.
I wouldnt touch a new generation 900 Saab with a barge pole, too many problems that were ironed out by the 9-3. I wouldnt touch a 9-3, electrical faults, poor handling and bulkhead cracking springs to mind. I wouldnt touch a post 2000 9-5 either. The later engines were lightened to reduce emissions and component reliability suffered. Unless you religiously change the oil,. i think they quote every 3-5k with decent oil they sludge up and engine dead.
Saying that the 9-5 Aero is an absolute rocket, looks the part, unbeatable performance, fully loaded with all the toys great tuning potential (although not as strong bottom end as the pre 2000 cars due to GM changing the engine specs around emissions crap) If I was buying one it wuld have to be full history from saab or very high regarded garage with regular stamps for oil changes.
9-3 Viggen in 3-5dr hatch, another great car, let down by its vectra chassis - can be improved by Abbott-Racing. An early 9-3 hatch with the 2.0T HOT engine is a cheap buy and basis for tuning as they have the early engine which can see 300bhp without touching the internals. Asuming you can put up with reliability niggles, electrical faults and possibly of a cracked bulkhead they are not too bad lol.
If I was to buy a Saab and fuel costs werent sky high I would probably go for a 97 9000 Aero. Even by modern standards they are brutally quick, very tunable and for thier size/weight they handle decently too.

They are part of the family, when something is up nothing else matters.
9-5s look classy, are available with a slushbox and can be picked up for buttons, but I've heard horror stories.
