If they built a 4x4 405, a RWD 406 wouldn't have been beyond the ken of Pug.

Rover managed it on the 75 V8.

I thought peugeot had intended to make the 508 a back wheel drive car so it would compete better with the germans.

Their intention with the 508 (and pretty much all their new cars now) is to manufacture them as hybrids - petrol/diesel driving one axle and a pair of electric motors powering the other. This gives them 4WD, and means the cars can be zero-emission while running on electric motors only.

I haven't looked closely enough at their new cars to see if they're all like that, or if it's a hideously-expensive optional extra.

Is RWD really any good, its ok if you want to have fun in a car park and do some donuts, or go sideways round a corner, but most of the time FWD is more than adequate.

Peugeot making rugged cars again wouldn't it be great, the 505 and 305 were as good as they got, good simple mechanicals and no electrics to go wrong. The only downside was perhaps not enough zinc on the metal. The problem now is the necessity to fit so much crap that will go wrong in the interests of either the environment or safety.

im likeing all the comments and idears, i would like to fit a twin turbo supra lump into a 406 but it would take some doing as ive already had the tape mesure out and there would be alot of cutting and welding to do to get it to fit,although i have fitted the supra lump into a carlton before and it was fun and very fast

I feel the best way to go with the modern cars/engines is what most pro tuners like the K-tec Renault guys are doing. The trend seems to be to retain the original engine, uprate its internals, slap on a MASSIVEEEE turbo and play with the engine management. I was reading about K-tec's Clio 182 trial car lately in PFC which they'd developed a turbo kit for, they had the little 2.0 clio chucking out 330bhp on 0.9bar of boost and at 1.5bar it was throwing out 400bhp The same could be done for 406/407's, bigger turbo, injectors, upgrade the internals and play with the engine management. The stumbling block is that no-ones really that interested in developing systems for these cars as there's no demand. I think the days of engine transplants are pretty much gone as far as modern stuff is concerned...
