immobiliser problem

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

immobiliser problem

Post by kui »

My car wouldn't start one day- engine just turned over - didn't fire, (previously never failed)- readout said "immobiliser fault",also other weird things, couldn't turn lights or wipers off, remote central locking dead(though could still unlock manually).
took to peugeot dealer who attached his laptop thingy / said no ongoing fault showing / got it going again - everything back to normal, until we switched engine off while I paid his bill ! - tried to re-start, everything up the creek - same as before.
he tells me he suspects key recognition unit, attached to ignition barrel, is faulty.
questions -:

- can I just buy this unit, or do I have to replace whole ECU, - (which I'm told isn't faulty) - as well ?

- if I get a replacement recognition unit/fit it - will it automatically start talking to my ECU or will I need to go back to peugeot to have it programmed ?

Hi kui, and welcome to the forum,

The reader around the ignition lock: you shouid be able to change with no problem, it shouid be just Plug and play,
no need for programing ishouidnt think,

Hi, I have the same problem. Could not start my 406 hdi yesterday - immobiliser and battery fault lights showing plus 'Economy Mode Active' on display. The drivers carpet was soaking wet plus water in fuse compartment (I had been driving in rain most of previous day and suspect windscreen leak). Am now drying out - should I try to lift the carpet? and is there any way of re-setting the immobiliser? Cannot move the car and so cannot take it to my favourite local garage.
