110 Executive HDI estate with blown HG, what's it worth?

Post by millard »

As above, only discovered the Head Gasket was gone when I towed a caravan last weekend. I suspect it may have been gone for a while but as the car never overheated it didn't show before. Still drives great funnily enough, obviously loses a wee bit of coolant.
Excellent clean reliable car otherwise.
Was going to repair it myself but just don't have the time so will look for another Executive.
Also don't have the time nor space to break it unfortunately as I recon it'd be worth a bit in spares.

Meanwhile I have to sell it have but have no idea what it's worth, any ideas please guys?

Unfortunately, with a blown HG it's only worth scrap value - who'd pay any more if they didn't have to? any potential buyer is going to be taking a risk in getting it fixed so it's only worth what they're prepared to pay for it.

Probably a couple of hundred quid?

How much would it cost a mobile mechanic to come in and replace the gasket? Even if it's as much as £200, then it's still probably worth doing - the car could still be worth more than a grand in full working order.

When you consider it'll be worth scrap value (£200 at most) to anybody buying it in its current condition, by not paying to get the gasket replaced, you're effectively throwing away £800 (or more), and the car may well end up in a scrap yard sooner rather than later anyway even if someone did buy it.

iwouid put it on ebay, or send it through car auction,

you wouid get alot more back that way than selling it to a scrap yard,

That's a good idea, especially the auction.

Thanks for your replies guys.
After looking around at the price of a replacement Executive model (13-1500 ish) I reckon I'll try for a local mechanic to do the work. Cash in hand should get a decent enough price to make it more cost effective than scrapping and getting a replacement, which I won't know as well as mine.
Can't pass on a dud at auction, just not in me to do that.

cheers

have u had the car checked over ? for coolant leaks ?

i think before you go throwing money at head gasket replacement get it tested. garages can do some sort of sniff test with the coolant .

it could just be a coolant leak from radiator etc .
