Been summond to a Halfords Autocenter...

Post by Bailes1992 »

Got a slightly sticking thermostat on the Mondie.
Nothing major, just now and again on overun the coolant tempreture drops down to minimum on the gauge, as soon as you put your foot back on the accelerator it warms again instantley.

So phoned up CarShop who booked me into a Halfords Autocenter at 4 on Tuesday :| God help me.

Could be worse, you'd be more worried if they were changing the timing belt

But I'd still be watching the temperature gauge like a hawk for, ohh, 6 months.
Seriously dude, you'd be better off doing it yourself, at least you know it'll be done by someone whose trousers aren't around their ankles...

That doesn't really make sense to me unless it's some kind of electronic thermostat. What you describe means that when you lift off the thermostat opens fully and over-cools the water, then you jump on the gas and it closes :? :?

To me it sounds as though the coolant temp sensor is faulty? or there's air in the system? I'm sure those nice chaps at Halfords will get you sorted though

Might be this........http://www.talkford.com/topic/106691-te ... try1017184

Seems there's another thermostat controlling the oil cooling. If you google "1.8tdci temperature gauge dropping" there's a few posts about it.

yeah thats the one,
the little thermostats are not much bigger than a bottle cap,
not sure if the mk 4 will have it tho, but ialways changed both on the mk3s, ive done alot of water pumps on them which are a p.i.t.a
as they have the pwr steering pump built in with them

Thing is I doubt its a sensor because it does it bang on when I start going down a hill (I.e. 60mph using no throttle). The moment I put my foot back on the accelerator it warms right back up again over 5-10 seconds.

I can't see how a engine can lose that much heat that quick just by coming off the throttle for a short period of time. :?

Yeah I done it yesterday to work out what versiuon of Convers+ I have on my Mondeo.
Dials are fine. I'm convinced its the thermostat. It's just the speed it does it at, also seems a little intermitant.

Halfords is a garage?

Are they like kwik fit, or do they do all jobs?
