How likely is an ECU Failure?
Guys - how likely is it that a car can fail the ECU and lose milage?
Or Easy is it to fiddle the milage?
Curious or Fumin' Dunno yet......

You can give any car a hair cut with the right software,
if its a d9 bsi holds that info as well as the clocks,
so if its lost miles, someone more than likely give it a trim, iknow if you change clocks it just adds the miles up to whats on them ,
software and the right plug me in thingy wouid be the only way id think,

Last MOT Status.
Date of test:
07/07/2011 - 100,460 Miles
18/08/2010 - 87,540 Miles
17/06/2010 - 84,948 Miles
11/03/2008 - 128,398 Miles
03/09/2007 - 116,490 Miles
26/02/2007 - 104,199 Miles
22/08/2006 - 92,559 Miles
12/07/2006 - 89,841 Miles
Now what really concerns me is Test station name: MILLENNIUM CITY TAXIS LTD.
Seriously now thinking where do I stand with the seller - albeit this was a year ago. Not happy at all.
I know i should of done my research - burnt myself now on that one, but the car is gonna be moved on soon.......

Re: How likely is an ECU Failure?
Depends on your receipt you got from the seller mate,
if hes put a mileage disclaimer on it, then ithink thats it game over,
taxis are prone for loosing a few miles here and there,
Ipresume youve bought an ex taxi,?

Re: How likely is an ECU Failure?
@ pilch, whats wrong with the car mate, why move it on?
if it runs ok and its relable, iwouidnt worry about the miles, its not fair youve got one with dodgey miles but iwouidnt worry about it
if its a good motor,
ive had a few cars with millions of miles on them and theyve never missed a beat,

Re: How likely is an ECU Failure?
surely though they would need to check the VIN number for an MOT?
Re: How likely is an ECU Failure?
chatting to a MOT Tester fella i know, he said some places will make private hire/taxi's have 2 tests a year, explains the several tests some years.....
but me thinks, trading standards might be interested........

took acar in once for mot it was millions of miles past its service so it was showing that info not the miles,
the tester put that info on the mot not the actual mileage..in error,
the car ive got now wouidnt show the miles until ireset the service counter, icarnt rember if the 406 does the same
Re: How likely is an ECU Failure?
Yeah but to be wrong like that is a bit excessive!
im on the lookout for another car so if anyone heres of a reasonable 406 HDI preferably in the South West - Im Near Exeter - The please let me know!

Re: How likely is an ECU Failure?
Has it had a new engine?
I've heard of people fitting new engines with lower mileage and adjusting the clock to reflect that (despite the rest of the car covering the higher mileage)

Re: How likely is an ECU Failure?
Nothing to suggest it has - although a mechanic that worked on it before christmas found a lot of the breather pipes around the engine connected in a different manner to usual - He tried setting it up as it should be and it wouldnt run!
If the speedo has been wound back, how much do you think it would affect the value by?
