D8 Clocks Question
I noticed last time I had the clocks out the mileage display looked like it could easily be removed.
If I were try some clocks from a scrapper to cure my dodgy speedo issues (still haven't hunted down the dry joint) could I just swap the mileage displays over to keep the correct mileage?
Also if that would work could I use clocks from a higher spec model and have any extra functions just work without further mods?
Thanks in advance
Gareth

Re: D8 Clocks Question
ive swapped clocks a few times and you just have to make sure you get them from the right engine as petrol ones have a diffrent red line but they still work
dont know about swapping the miles
i have a 2.1 exec and i thought it might be a good idea to fill all the missing bulb holders with bulbs.the proplem is that when they all light up you cant switch them off!!
i think one of mine was to show if the rear seat belts were fastened [good idea when you have kids in the back]but the light didnt go off as it didnt have the wireing to the seatbelt.

Re: D8 Clocks Question
im sure i read on this forum before if u change clocks it adds the 2 milages up and displays the total.
so if your car has 100k on and the car u get new clocks out has 100k on when u fit them to your car it will display 200k
i have no idea if this is true but i am pretty sure i read that sumwere on this forum years ago. something to do with the ecu memorizing the milage and storing it..

Re: D8 Clocks Question
I dont know about the clocks but it happened to me when i installed a new ecu and BSI, my car now shows as 304k lol, i believe the mileage is stored on multiple places in the car, so if you changed them and it added the miles together you would have to get the mileage reprogrammed which can be costly or live with it, i'm living with mine, though it usually makes the MOT man ask how i've kept the car in such good condition or people think that there is a decimal point that they've missed and quote it as 30.4k lol

Re: D8 Clocks Question
had a look on service box last night and it seemed to agree with what I thought. The actual mileage display appears to be seperate and potentially detaches from the rest of the clocks, in which case I should be able to remove my mileage display and put it in replacement clocks keeping the mileage genuine.
Wish I'd kept the clocks out of my old one now.
Breakers here I come

Re: D8 Clocks Question
This detachable display unit is only a LCD. It only displays the mileage stored elsewhere. So changing the display alone would help? I doubt.

Re: D8 Clocks Question
What you need to find the the Eeprom, that will have all the information on, I did this on my old Seat Cordoba. I made a set of clocks up from a petrol with trip computer and then converted them to work in a diesel, then swapped the Eeprom and it had my old mileage on
and I had the only diesel with a fully working trip computer.
Its on my list of things to do to my D8, Trip computer, cruise control, dipping rear mirror ( I really miss this already ) and auto headlights
that will do for me for a start.
Can you tell I'm a electronic engineer by trade lol.

Re: D8 Clocks Question
Speedo now fixed, actually printed off the how-to yesterday and did the job properly. Found 3 of the 4 solder joints on the pcb with huge cracks in.
Borrowed the father in laws fine tipped soldering iron and jobs a good-un.
Shame I didn't do that 4 months ago but I have exercised my brain converting revs and gear selection to mph so not all bad

Re: D8 Clocks Question
It's in the knowledge base mate

Just take your time and it's straight forward job, only bit I struggled with was getting the clip off the ribbon cable as I was concerned about damaging it, you'll see what I mean when you strip the clocks down.

Re: D8 Clocks Question
It's really not tricky, I printed the instructions off and had them on the table next to the clocks.

Re: D8 Clocks Question
Took it for a shopping trip yesterday, filled the tank; 493 miles on 55 litres, = 40.8 mpg, not bad for the nature of the driving.
As I pressed the trip reset button the clocks jumped to the correct readings. I think I am on the right track with this one.
The weather is more reasonable today, I may have a go.
