heater and other problems

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

heater and other problems

Post by Mig5 »

Does anyone have pictures of the heater fan resistor together with wiring/ fan motor, etc?
Bought a 1999 D8.5 2.0hdi and someone made a right mess of the wiring for the heater and I think said resistor may actually be missing.
Fan only works on maximum speed and motor has no faults but wiring is a right mess under glovebox.
Have searched threads here about heater problems but none provides the insight i require.
Any help is very welcome!

Have plugged replacement motor (with resistor) at the local scrappie and fan runs the same: on maximum speed only!
Had electrician check wiring and all is there, what else am I missing?
Its not an intermittent problem, so it shouldn't be connection around steering wheel.

Some progress was made today.
Wiring on fan motor was reversed so no blowing was coming out of vents. All is nearly well now...
Some regulation is available now but wont switch off completely, so for the moment a switch was mounted for when a blast is needed.
Resistor is there in place, but maybe problem is that control unit is not really controlling?!

Another mistery:
After driving for a while a cracking noise is heard from around clocks/steering cowling.
After this, most times odometer screen goes off and a few moments later it pops on again.
Most recently it goes off for less than a second and then comes back on.
Someone has suggested that it is an electric discharge of some sort?!
Ideas anyone?

well since this thread has reached so many helpful souls I will carry on updating it  .
I guess it is only too common for members needing help every day with dodgy electrics and so on.
MOT (irish equivalent) retest was passed today. Dont remember any of my cars passing first time in last 3or 4 years, so am well happy with that. :cheesy:

Now back to that heater unit and my fuel pump held in place with wood and woodscrews  ...

I might be wrong but the fan never does switch off completely, well in my 2003 Executive it doesn't.I changed the resisitor a while back and noticed the fan never does quite stop completely just seems to idle.

This world is made up of two sorts of people - those that have had problems with their heater blower and know all about them and those that haven't. Yet

How does it pass a safety test with wood screws holding the fuel pump on? Ah, I know, you've got one of them cover things :supafrisk:

Well this is more than idling, it still goes quite fast and is loud too.

I only discover it like that a few hours before test, while investigating fuel smell and fresh air coming from under seats. Cover was there, but not covering anything. I made it fit! :D
I seem to be missing the ring between fuel pump and tank!! Anyone have decent pics of this?
Haynes manual ones are quite useless.

Do you mean the rubber ring or the big screw ring that holds it all down? The rubber ring is just a big o-ring, the one on my D9 perished and it started leaking fuel everywhere so I got both the o-ring and the locking ring. We had to get the tank off because it doesn't fit through the hole under the seat (I think they do on the saloon but this might be why yours is missing). Me and the mechanic had the tank on the ground but neither of us could get the new locking ring back on, it just wanted to cross thread all the time, so it ended up with the old one back on it and I still have it in a bag somewhere.

Hold on... Excellent, there's even a piccy viewtopic.php?f=5&t=14836&hilit=locking ... 60#p149616

That is exactly what I needed thanks. Some diesel was around top of tank and slowly running to the ground so will get both those items.
Many thanks steve!
