airbags after 10+ years
Does anyone have experience of airbags not working properly or safely after 12 years?
Can second hand (newer) ones be fitted to this effect?
Peugeot recommends changing them after 10 years i think. thanks.

Re: airbags after 10+ years
That's an interesting point actually.
My Volvo carries a sticker/plate which states the Airbags should be inspected/replaced in April 2020 (at 15 years old) there's at least 6 air bags/curtains so in reality when the car gets to 15 it's pretty much worthless (written off in effect).
Another angle to consider is that if inspection/replacement is "recommended" by the manufacturer, and you don't bother, then your insurance might have something to say about it if you have an accident and the Airbags didn't deploy
Article from The Telegraph about this:
The trouble with airbags is that, in order to deploy fully in 10 thousandths of a second, they rely on a chemical reaction that turns sodium azide into nitrogen and propels the bag into the cabin at 200mph, inflating en route. But chemicals degrade as time passes, so manufacturers have to put a use-by date on the airbags because, according to the AA's head of technical policy John Stubbs, they have a finite lifespan. He says: "You can't say an airbag will fire at the right speed after five years because it's very difficult to replicate the normal life effect on the ageing of the chemicals.

Re: airbags after 10+ years
Thats good info right there welly, I am just a bit worried because my wife and my 7 month old daughter will be the usual passengers in the 406 and I would like to think they would be safe (and myself) if anything had to happen.
Would be curious to find how much would peugeot charge for the parts, 'cause the labour should be simple enough for me to undertake, I imagine!

Re: airbags after 10+ years
To be fair I think it's more about manufacturers 'covering themselves' so they came up with 10, 15 years to have them "inspected"
I would say these airbag systems would still work perfectly after many years - a bit like finding a WW2 bomb that still 'works'
I say 'work perfectly' I'm sure it was the 406 which left the factory, initially, with the Passenger and Driver bags wired up asre-about-face! not that much use in a crash
(this was solved on a recall I believe and only affected the 2003? cars or something).

Re: airbags after 10+ years
yeah I could go and find if they actually work by disengaging them without unplugging battery in advance?!
Shall we have odds on this?
