Please can someone tell me why my 406 HDI 2.2 Estate seems so sluggish or seems to have very little torque. When it gets to 2,000 RPM I can feel the turbo come in, but below that it is very dead. My previous 2.0 HDI seemed much more lively ? I park on a hill and when starting from cold, I can hardly get it to move off from the kerb up the hill. The fuel consumpyion is fairly poor at 42mpg, it had no problem with the MOT emissions test. Even on the motorway it is very smooth but sometimes in top gear I feel I need to change down.
The car has only done 70,000. Is this just a symptom of the 16 valve engine that needs to be revved more like a petrol car ? please advise.

Re: 406 2.2 HDI --- Sluggish
Your 2.2 should not seem sluggish, a little turbo lag can happen at times, but it should be convincingly quicker than either a 2.0 90 or 110 HDi. It should also be significantly smoother and quieter, (which can make it seem less lively than it realy is). It should pull well, (though perhaps not instantly), from about 14/1500 RPM. Maximum torque,(235 lb/ft or 314 Nm) is produced at 2000 RPM.
Do you have any warning lights, Anti-Pollution fault, or any other messages on the MFD?

Re: 406 2.2 HDI --- Sluggish
Thanks for the two replies-- there are no warning lights and in fact when the car was plugged in via the dashboard plug, it only made a comment about glow plugs. But, it starts very well and it is sluggish when hot as well as cold. It certainly does not pull well from 1400 rpm, only at about 2000rpm when the turbo seems to spin up. Yes, the car is very smooth and quiet compred to my previous 2.0 110BHP. I might take it to First diesel here in Croydon, but they are only open on week days which is annoying. Any other ideas ? I do not want to take it to my local Peugeot garage as they just plug it in and say they cannot see anything on the laptop then charge me £60.

Oooh, two answers, I feel bad
Swirl flaps?
You could try asking over on the coupe club, the 2.2 HDi is fairly rare here but all the diesel coupes feature this engine

Re: 406 2.2 HDI --- Sluggish
Swirl flaps possibly, but when mine weren't working the only noticeable effect was poorer throttle response. If it's not a particulate filter issue, (which the lack of warning lights / MFD messages seems to confirm), next favourite is a vaccum problem affecting control of the turbo.
As Steve says, there's more info on the coupe forum, I'd particularly recommend a read of this http://www.406coupeclub.org/PHPBB3/view ... 82&t=35570
Does it start easily, BTW?

Re: 406 2.2 HDI --- Sluggish
I drove Doggys remapped 2.2 and a remapped HDI110 on the same day.
The 2.2 was massivley faster but the 110 felt quicker because of the 'woosh' you got when the turbo kicked in. The 2.2 just pulled consistantley right through the revs.

Thank you to all the replies. The problem has been cured by the fitment of a new airflow sensor, which I believe is under the airfilter.
Car drives completely differently and has much more pull at low revs. Work done by First Diesel on Thornton Road, Croydon.
