Oil filler Cap keeps coming off...!

Post by exmouthram »

Hi, Its my first post on this site so please be gentle...

I bought my 406 hdi 1.9 2001 3 weeks ago... first week, no problems.
second week i noticed oil stains on the road when ive parked up for a while. Lifted bonet and notice oil caked all over the engine and the oil filler cap missing. So, luckly found the cap wedged next to the radiator, put it back on, topped up the oil and off i went. Few days later... oil all over the road again, had a look, oil everywhere again and the cap missing... once again I was lucky as the cap was hiding in the engine.

Could anyone help as to what could be the problem thats causing this, car is running fine but leaving an oil trail where ever i go....
Thanks, Adie.

Welcome Adie, don't worry we're a friendly bunch on here.

BTW the HDI comes in 3 flavours, 2.0 90 or 110 BHP or 2.2, the 1.9 pre-dates the HDI but your 2001 car will be a HDI therefore not a 1.9.

If you're lucky it will have too much oil in it. If you've just bought the car it's always worth an oil and filter change anyway.

I'd try that first off and see what happens, tesco had some 4 litre tubs of 10/40 semi-synth for £10 the other day so oil and filter change should be under £20. If it doesn't cure it at least you haven't shelled out for premium oil.

If you can add your engine/model in your sig it helps when you need advice.

Good luck and again welcome to the club

Could be the engine cover is loose and rubbing against the filler cap can
also cause the dipstick to lift , the rubber mounts that hold the cover on
tend to wear and snap off.

Also, maybe your oil filler cap or cam cover is damaged / loose, making it easier to come off?

If you add your location, you might be able to compare notes with someone nearby, or try another from a scrappy....

You could try popping to local stealer for a new cap. Mine was under a fiver at a local pug stealer in south London
