Proposed mot revisions

I'm sure we had a bit of a discussion om mot changes a bit back, but after going through 8 pages on the search function I gave up

Recieved some info from the DfT yesterday

Anyway, i'm sure last time there was talk of going 4-2-2 on the test i.e 4 years for first test, then every two years
Looks more like going 4-2-1 i.e first test at 4 years, then second at 6 years, then annually
However, if your car reaches 160,000 kms, or 100,000 miles, before the above, then you automatically go onto annually

All electronic drivers aids will be testable i.e Stability control etc

There is also talk, that a car "may" have to be tested on change of ownership - can't see it, but it's part of the discussion

I think every car should have a compulsory test when first registered (Regardless of age) and anually after that.

Time and time again I see 2 year old Beemers with bald tyres and bulbs out knowing that in 12 months time when the MOT is due they will still have bald tyres and bulbs out.

all cars should be tested yearly.....regardless of age. A car owned by an old couple who perhaps do 2000 miles annually wouldnt probably find any faults.

but a rep mobile thats thrashed around the country going on motorways country lanes etc clocking up silly amounts of mileage a year will generate wear and tear that could be fatal to themselves or another motorist or pedestrian.

I would like to see some form of mileage check made by MOT testers or the certificates displaying the previous mileage on the car at last MOT test and the current mileage at the time of test. Surely that wouldnt be hard to implement?

A new rule already brought in states that any warning lights, indicator lights or any light on the dashboard that are on when they shouldn't be is an instant fail.
If the car has an MFD, any error message called up are also an instant fail.

So for us 406 owners, the error "Low brake fluid level" caused by a dirty handbrake switch will cause an instant MOT fail!

My renaults just passed the mot afew weeks ago,

Airbag lights flashing,
service light flashing and she went through,

looks like the new rule is not in force yet, seen a few people getting through the Mots with airbag lights on,

iuse a Strict Mot Garage.

(One thing idid notice tho,is if a car is fitted with a undertray or engine cover,you get an Advisory, Mine says Advisory. Undertrays and engine covers fitted thus not allowing full inspection, iguess they wanted to see if the Cat was present,

That's not really fair is it?
Advisory's should be to point out things that will need sorting soon, not things that couldn't be checked. I mean I understand that they're reporting that something couldn't be tested and as such could be a danger, but I pride myself on keeping my car in top nick so that I have a nice clean sheet come MOT time. Plenty of folk include it as a positive for the advert when they're selling a car.
Difficult I guess.
There are funny rules about what can't be tested though. I remember one test when I'd forgotten that my toolbox was still in the boot (from the pre MOT check) and the tester told me he couldn't check the spare wheel as he wasn't allowed to shift it to lift the carpet and look in the spare wheel well. I said I'd shift it, but he wasn't interested.
I find wing mirrors comical too - broken mirror glass is a fail, but if your wing mirror has been knocked clean off, it's not testable as it's not present

Yeah true,

ididnt see the Advisorys as Fair, but ididnt kick up a fuss, ijust got the Hell outa there with the car Quickly,
they was abit Brutal with it especialy on the Smoke test,
and they had the car coming off the Rollers on the Brake test,

iguessed upon they didnt like French cars, iheard something being cursed in another language,

So iguess not all Mot testers will be the same on Strict ness of things,
