Re: Freelanders
gear boxes go - more likely reverse i think and expensive to fix at that.
I did toy with the idea - great for the dog to have his own window in the back for trips!

The centre diff goes, usually they just take the rear prop shaft off & sell them quick. I did investigate them before I got the RAV - di-sast-er-ous!

Re: Freelanders
A mate of mine is a 4x4 specialist and as said they suffer from headgaskets (mostly petrols),centre diff probs, electric window regulators and a host of other niggly probs, one odd problem which can prove expensive is that when the tailgate is opened the rear window should drop about an inch to clear the frame seal when the handle is pulled and it raises back up when the tailgate is shut so worth checking that.I bought one a while back (2000 W) with a blown headgasket with a view of doing it up for the o/h to drive but it started to turn into a money pit so it got shoved on ebay for some other brave soul to repair.

Re: Freelanders
I know of neighbours that had a freelander the rear diff gave problems, with oil leaks and then a whining noise, it also was a rattly thing to sit in.
A similarly aged suzuki vitara would be more reliable, there was a 5dr model with the XUD.

Re: Freelanders
There a constant 4x4 and my mate said that when you change tyres it's recommended that all 4 are changed at the same time as the rolling dia needs to be as near the same as possible to prevent the diffs winding up.When going slow on full lock they have a tendency to "hop" as all the wheels are trying to turn at the same speed,it's a weird sensation.Another 4x4 to look at is the Mitsubishi Pinin, same basic setup as the Freelander but more reliable,i bought a 52 plate pinin for a song a couple of years back and i found it better than the Freelander.

As of the K-series engines they dont Bother me, ive got used to changing headgaskets on them

Re: Freelanders
The trouble is with the Freelanders with a blown headgasket is more often than not the head is fubbared and good replacement heads are hard to come by and when you factor in the cost of the head skim, uprated headgasket kit and new stretchbolts etc etc and the cost of sorting out the other faults you can get an up and running one for the same money,i paid £250 for mine and i worked out by the time i'd spent the money on it getting it up to scratch i wouldn't have made much more money than selling it on as it was.
