Broadband again!

Post by leestudd30 »

Now I'm finally connected again I've noticed that I can actually get fibre optic and about time, even after moving I still only get 1.5MB at best. So I logged into my Plusnet account to try to get their value package for £16.49 a month without the phone. I couldn't remove the calls package from my order so rang them instead, to be told that even if you just have the fibre broadband you still have to pay the line rental. Now maybe I was being stupid but I was hoping it would be £16.49 with nothing on top, it doesn't say on the website you still have to pay rental, having been on money supermarket I now see it does say line rental too. Even with that there still isn't much between basic fibre and calls packages, still got to fork out around £30 a month for most of them including Sky and BT.

Fibre optic only goes as far as the green boxes you see in your street. It comes in then normally through the telephone socket.

Cabinets.

Oddly enough I had a kip earlier and dreamt I was back working for BT: I was in the exchange and my laptop had crapped out again but I couldn't remember the phone number for my control.

Fibre optics!! I'm lucky we're not still using semaphore here

My bro still works for them, it sounds to me like they've not got long to go - all the equipment's falling over, no spares, no time allowed to fix anything permanently let alone do any preventative maintenance and all management care about is stats, stats, stats, keeping the shareholders happy and getting their golden handshake after a couple of years. I'm so glad I'm out of there :frown:

The point idont get with Bts internet is its not one company,
they send another company out to do all the Graft, (open Reach)

and as for the power of the Broadband it aint what its supposed to be,
and the More you complain to them the More B/s they give you, being far away from the Green box is one of them

normaly they say its quite far away from the house hence the downfall in service

they soon change the subject tho when itell them its outside my house, Shall i bring it into the living room/is the cabinet heavy :frown:

Would that be BT Openreach? After my time but more organisational sillyness, more divisions, more managers, less staff...

The old ones are cast iron, you'll not be moving them in a hurry. New ones are ally & steel I think, they're what all the cable coms cos use. BT did experiment with glass fibre ones in the 80s, they burned very well

Not sure on the openReach tbh.

alls irember is one chap fitting the phone line and them him saying You will have to wait for another company to come and fit the Broadband (open Reach)
when they Arrived they fitted a Two way socket, and then another chap come took that out and fitted a differnt one,

Sounds daft dont it but thats what happend,

They even drilled through the Wall with a bent drill bit .. says it all realy

It's like the good old days of the BT shunt, where one team's responsibilities end and it got passed to another via the control, now it has to go all the way through one company and into another. It's like going to McDogburger's asking for a big mog and chips, getting the burger from one counter and then queuing up at another for the chips...

Well I've booked an appointment for Plusnet to install fibre at my place 2 weeks today, 40MB will be amazing compared to my current pathetic 1.5! Is it possible to get a phone that could use the internet connection to make calls without using Skype? I get tons of cold calls to my home phone and I haven't bothered plugging it in since I moved house.

Why without Skype?

You can buy a Skype phone, one that does not require a PC in order to work.

Connect the phone to your broadband router, log into your Skype account from the phone, and you can call Skype users for free, no matter where in the world they are. These phones are also dual-mode handsets - so you can plug them into the telephone line too, and make/receive external calls using your normal phone number.

I didn't want to use Skype as most of my family don't have it unfortunately! Otherwise I would get a Skype phone or just use the app, get so many cold calls on my landline thats why I haven't plugged it back in since I moved.

Well I finally managed to get my fibre broadband installed! Plusnet sent the router to my old address 3 times despite sending the engineer to the right one! But I now have a stable connection that always shows over 30MB download and over 7MB upload! My only issue is that the router and master socket are in the lounge and the signal isn't strong to connect in the other side of the flat, so I just need a wi fi repeater plugged in the hallway and then I'll be sorted!
