From Autoexpress:

I’ve often seen ‘XL’ stamped on tyres. What does this mean, and is there a performance advantage?
XL stands for Extra Load – or is sometimes referred to as Reinforced. Essentially, tyres bearing this stamp are designed for heavy cars rather than ones that carry big loads. Not only are they constructed to cope with weight, but also the higher tyre pressure these vehicles need to run at. This marking is usually found on lower-profile tyres used on large cars. It highlights the fact they are built to a higher weight rating, as there is nearly always a standard version in the same size in the maker’s range.

Interesting about the higher inflation pressures, I hadn't thought about this, my car lists a 'fully laden' and high-speed tyre pressure of 42PSi on the front so I guess that's also where the X-L comes into it.

Oh gees, I've just noticed the statement above says 'big loads' where's puggy this afternoon?

I'm putting *very* serious thought into winter tyres, at least on the back. I have no idea where to look though.

I know the normal tyres are 225/55/16W, but the "official" winter tyres are a lot thinner. Which should be cheaper, no? But what to get and what to put them on, I have no idea about. Obviously I'm not paying the stealer for a new £6000 set of alloys... And then there's the question of tyre brand to consider

I think when it snows I'll be keeping a good few nice heavy bags of grit to weigh down the boot in any case

In other news, the bimmer's "DSC" traction control is pretty damn impressive. Going round the roundabout I made the coupé squeal on every day, the Golf's traction control caused the car to exit at about 2mph, dry or wet. The bimmer seems happy to take it at the same speed as the coupé, although power feels slightly down until I'm heading straight off it. At this point I daren't turn the DSC off until I'm a lot more familiar with the car :supafrisk: It'll be interesting to see how badly it does in the white stuff!
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

There's loads of tests, I posted one further up :arrowu: it's probably better to look at test done in countries where they know what they're doing with them (actually, I think that one's ADAC)

I'm betting mjb's a bit more clued up than the usual BMW "oh look at me, I've got a big willy!" brigade.

Might have had a bit of luck here, someone on the Volvo forum is selling a set of 4 Uniroyal Winter's (done 3000 miles, one season) for £250.00.

He live's in my town too and I've now got first dibs on them 8)

They're even V-rated to 149mph

The all important ability to drive at speeds in excess of 100mph on snow...

It does seem a bit mad having to buy tyres that have speed ratings greatly in excess of what's actually legally allowed. Ok, there's an off chance you'll take the car abroad where you can drive it a teeny bit faster but wouldn't it all be a lot cheaper if you could just buy N or P rated tyres?

Bugger' I did'nt notice's that apostoffee it must have been the excitement of my looking forward to doing 149mph on an icy road and be perfectly safe

He's accepted my offer now and informed me the tyres are currently staying at a tyre 'hotel' all wrapped up nice  Volvo owners eh? you can't fault 'em

Worked out ok I guess cos I had just about caved in to the idea of slapping on 2 x Kumho's (at £200.00) just to get me through the Winter (they're nearly on the limiters). Now I'll have a set of 4 proper tyres until next March/April time :)

Actually.... I found a good web page for storing car tyres a while back but I can't find it now :( This one'll do though: http://www.tyres-pneus-online.co.uk/fit ... dvice.html (scroll down to "storing your tyres"). Note the stuff about protecting from light.
