cat d write off
Hi all. My cambelt snapped last night so needing a new car asap. have spotted a hdi 90 that was a cat d write off but repaired in 2007. its 700 quid with 105k on the clock. does being a write off make it more expensive or harder to insure?? Also the heater doesn't work but I'm sure that would ne an easy fix?? It seems a bargain but was just unsure on the insurance side of things. would appreciate all opinions and input .regards kev.

seriously though, 6-700 quid gets alot of volvo for not much cash. theyr'e on the list along with another 406 or a passat or is 200 but i fink the lexus will be a bit too thirsty...Welly wrote:Did someone call?
i've just checked the 406 i mentioned originally on my car check and it does say cat d write off 3 sep 2007. more worringly tho it has ELEVEN previous owners, first registered 2002 which is pretty much averaging 1 owner per year
hhmmm i'm smellin a lemon

Re: cat d write off
I wouldn't but something with that many owners.
The best Volvo's are the 1998 to 2001 ish models, like a V70 estate, can be a bit thirsty but you'll have no problems with them.
I don't know why they end up so cheap (*awaits typical response) but to those 'in the know' they make a cracking used car IMO.
Don't get an old Passat they're rubbish. And old IS200's are starting to fall into the hands of the ne'er-do-well's (like the Scoobies did).

Re: cat d write off
Got the missus' 2000 406 hdi90 estate off ebay for something like £650 a year ago with a newish MOT. Gave it a quick 'just to be sure' cambelt change (dead easy on these things!) and service for £100 or so, and it's been a trooper.
Bought dad a hdi90 estate off ebay a few months ago for £600 with a newish MOT. Giving it a new cambelt this weekend because again, we're unsure of history.
More money than that for a write-off seems a tad silly, unless it's in exceptional condition. 11 owners means it's almost certainly a lemon.

<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang
Re: cat d write off
just following on from this,
bought a 51 plate estate today.Hdi 110 , 150k on the clock.
gave it a decent once over and took it for a little spin just to make sure the clutch weren't slipping. mfd screens gone but all the dash bulbs light up and go out as they should , heaters work, fans work, aircon works, everything seems ok,10 stamps in service book.cam belt done at 63700 , and that is getting done asap with tensioners , pulley etc.
Last mot had 2 advisories :ARB linkage has play but not serious and rear disc worn and scored but not seriously weakened.
was a bit dubious as the guy had it running when i arrived but he delivered it on the back of a transit tonight and it started first time from cold.
not sure if its fully multiplex or not?? how do you tell? indicator stalk seems a bit "loose" compared to my D8 so migt have the common problem there too, but i shall have a better idea tomorrow.
all in all quite pleased with it, shall see how we go .will give it a service next weekend.
i know nothing about diesels so will probably be searching/posting for solutions to(hopefully) little problems that i'm bound to come across in the next few weeks
regards
kev

Ok, where are the pics?
If you didn't spot the stalks are a lot different to your D8's then it probably isn't, but a swift check on the sticker on the driver's a-post for the RPO will tell you: multiplex start at 09001.
