On the priming issue i didn't think nothing of it when i changed my filter just left the light go out as normal waited a few seconds and she started sweet as a nut.
@Jasper5 are these filter housings different to the norm then? the link to the pic jp2012 posted is at an angle and don't show that there's another connection at the bottom left.

I guess I'm with Steve on this, I just haven't seen the bottom of one
As I said earlier, I've only ever changed the filter element.
ah i thought with you being a mechanic you'd have taken one off.
The bottom pipes confused me for a bit i thought they were going back to the engine but when i squeezed my hand in there i thought... err wtf this feels like one pipe... i then came in and blew doggy's diagram up and could see it was one pipe.

Here's an update, once i had the filter on i headed out on a test drive and made her work pretty hard and all was well however on getting back and killing the ignition i heard all the fuel running back to the tank - it was drawing in air somewhere. So i started at the lift pump and took off the connections and re attached them and that was the problem right there. The seal didnt let any fuel out but it could let air in. That was a few days ago and I've done lots of miles since and she is running like a dream. This is my first 406 hdi and i am very impressed with it, a great bit of kit.
