I should NOT laugh at this because due to it's sheer size and thickness it's probably come from a very critical place but............

Any clues as to where one might suspect this has come from? On idol start up the engine does 'rock' a little but after some soul searching I've put this down to normal behavior because it DOES go away at temperature and if it was the engine mounts or movement limiter it would be there constantly.....

Ok - So I found where the bolt has come from - but what I don't know is: What it has screwed into. Can anyone tell me if (that is the gear box?) and if so if it has to be under some torque pressure or just as 'tight as I can get it'
Is it one of the bolts holding the gearbox to the engine? It could be one holding the starter in place, unless the starter bolts go the other way? Its odd a bolt that long could undo itself.
Possibly a mechanic or previous owner could have dropped the bolt, if you find where it goes clean the threads up and put a bit of thread lock to keep in in place in the future

I have a 1/2 drive torque wrench but with just the socket on the wrench it was too small to get grip and with the extension bar it was then too long
So I then used the 1/4 drive wrench and did as tight as I could, without putting too much pressure on it ... so it should be tight but not over tight and not under any torque pressure? Thanks

I did think it was the gear box to engine bolt but then thought I really don't trust my own diagnosis skills lol.
Do you mean starter motor? I definitely think it's a bit odd to of worked it's way out and it looks like it just came out the hole and just stayed on that ledge for a little rest........ It was in a fairly visible and easily reachable place so ... I doubt someone knowingly left it there......
You could do it up tight with a 3/8 drive ratchet and it be about the right torque, with a 1/4 drive you will definatley not over tighten it.
I have a calibrated elbow,I just do everything up to f.t, I will let you draw your own conclusions as to what that stands for!

Well you see, I have a slight problem, I lack a LOT of tools (setting up again for the second time is no fun I can tell you..) and my 3/8 drive broke over Christmas as I was fannying about with what do you call it's on the boys bikes.... I guess the point is, at what point do I pull back and say ''that's tight enough'' or keep pushing it and risk damaging the bolt? It is tight currently so maybe I should just now leave it, keep an eye on it - see if it works lose at all?

It is a bolt that holds the gearbox to the engine block,if you have got it as tight as you can with the 1/4 drive I am sure that will be good enough.Once tightened it wont be under any udue stress,have you or the previous owner had a clutch fitted? it has probably just not been fully tightened and vibrated itself out.
Nothing to worry about,no need to loctite it in it will be fine.

No clutch done with me but no previous service history with the car, apart from it's first few years of life as it was a hire car.

Thanks so much, yep, 16mm head so it's definitely from the gearbox to engine, did suspect that as the starter motor is to the left front, where as this right and back - thanks so much
