Dash Cam

Post by steve_earwig »

So anyway, there I was ordering loads of computer stuff when I noticed what else they had for sale....

aPz_Ah2qiX8

Just a try out, driving from the wife's house to mine. It's also the first time I've uploaded to yewtoob (did I do anything right?) and I wasn't at all sure what I was doing. The original is 720p (7 pounds 20?), weighing in at a humongous 700 megs so I've compressed and resized it with Virtual Dub. Nonetheless it was still 95Megs worth and took over an hour to upload  I know it's probably much longer than it needs to be but can anyone tell me of a better size/codec to use?

The camera itself is one of these: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Prestigio-Road- ... 184&sr=8-1 Feck me, how much? I only paid half that (something is Cheaper in Croatia for once), I'm not overly impressed with the quality and I'd be right p...ed off if I'd paid more than 60 quid for it :frown: On top of that it also needs an SDHD card for another 20 quid.

My dad always says if you're going to get one get a good one, to which I add but if you don't know anything about it, get a cheap one and work out why it's cheap.

We were talking about it before yes, it was in a thread about insurance so I thought I'd make a shiny new thread just for these things now I has one :cheesy:

Maybe the lighter socket was wired up bass-ackwards, a lot of this cheap junk has no protection for that sort of thing.

It wouid be worth while Spending a few quid on A decent one,

If Insurers gave a Reduction on using one, at present ive only found imobiliers etc, reducing costs,
so hardly worth it, the only good thing isee is it couid back you up in the event of a crash 4 casher trying there luck,

if theyre Reasonably Shop priced id deffo buy one, but idont trust buying stuff off the net anymore, been stung too many times now
so iwill wait until the likes of Maplin etc stock such things,

Plenty of car crash compilation videos made using that type of camera:
VeN7zJhtg60

The quality looks ok, ive tried making my camcorder do this with a windscreen mount but it never sits right. With cheap cameras like this producing such clear footage its a wonder them police chase shows have such crappy grainy footage

My camcorder records in 720p, when the videos are edited imovie saves them as MOV, a 9 min 720p film is about 650Mb, a 13min film is 980Mb (if you were a fan of maths im sure there is a way to work out roughly how much a minute takes in terms of space).
Although when uploading them to youtube it can take a few hours, uploading the stuff at night when the computer is not being used works best.

Most of the films you download are, say 750 megs for a 90 minute movie, which are resized to something like 640x480 but are perfectly watchable full screen. This kind of makes 650 megs for 9 minutes a bit mad really. Even compressed & resized my little drive there was 95 megs and took about 70 minutes to upload, so how long for the original 700 megs to upload? 700/95x70/60= oooh, about 8 and a half hours

If I keep watching those car crash videos I'm not going to want to drive anywhere....

About 8 hours sounds right, just leaving the computer to run overnight is the only way

The camcorder with a 32gb sd card in it and set to the highest quality setting says it can record for 7hours and 22 mins. Thats at least 4gb per hour

The funny thing is i downloaded one of the videos off youtube it was 42.7Mb in MP4 when downloaded, after editing it, ie just muting the sound and cutting it shorter the finished file in M4V was 244.7Mb.

The video keeps speeding up like in 'bursts'? unless that's your lambda sensor playing up again?

Decent enough quality though from where I'm sitting.

Yes quality looks fine. It's probably a very good idea to have one of those.

The car crash videos are really scary!!

Yeah that was mental! Had to back that one up and watch it again, I think he drove over a downed cable that was still attached at one end.

The thing that scares the crap out of me is how many of them were doing nothing wrong and just got completely wiped out by some idiot! Things like getting killed on your way to work can really take the shine off your day...
