Done dozens of those clutches....

Undo a big nut under inner wing, take off circlip on clutch shaft, screw in slide hammer adapter bolt or just screw in 7/16 unf bolt and pull out shaft, 4 bolts on cover, fit clips to keep pressure plate compressed, undo clutch mounting bolts and remove clutch.

Fit new one with compression clips attached, shaft and circlip back in, big nut in, pull off clips on pressure plate and job done... :D

I still have the tools in my tool box.

I've had two Cavs in the early days, I had a *mint* x-reg around 1988 bought from my Uncle - it was a 1.6L in Smoke Blue. Apart from changing the valve stem oil seals (took a few hours) it was brilliant - I even saw it 12 years later (it has been ziebarted from new).

I also had a Y-reg SRi which was lowered with multi-spoke wheels a Janspeed 4-2-1 Fanimold and full eggsauce system - that thing flew and easily pulled 135mph. I remember the Family 2 engine used to love being thrashed.

Me and my Bro in law changed the clutch on the SRi on the drive outside the house with simple tools but I remember we had to borrow some weird thing from a mechanic to screw into the centre of something or other :?

Might try and dig out some pics and scan them in.

I had a Manta

Bought it in black with
400 body kit
Revolution 5 spokes
and just a 1.8 family 2 engine

Resprayed it white
400 Bonnet
2.0 XE "red top"
Twin 48 Webbers, with trumpets and socks on PMC inlet (Peter Maiden Components)
PMC Exhaust Manifold
Ashley exhaust
Bilsteins
Tarox discs
Changed to early type calipers i.e twin pot instead of single
Braided brake lines and 5.1 brake fluid
Sand blasted the wheels and resprayed in white (were silver)
Lowered 4" on front and 3.5" at rear

Handled really well, went very well  , you could get the back end out, but was oh so controllable

SO wish I still had it
Even with the webbers on it, you could get 50mpg out of it still
Wasn't too bad to insure, the 1.8 was quite cheap to insure, and the insurance co. said they'd load the policy by the increase in bhp, so went from 90bhp to 180bhp, so they doubled it, but as it was so cheap in the first place, it wasn't that bad. Not like the 406 where I never told them about the remap, and with the mods I paid double for that :(
1999 D8.5 HDi GLX - Sold :(

2007 Mondingo Zetec - I seek forgiveness :( Bring back my 406

Too easy for the home mechanic to do it perhaps :? Much better to make it a 10 hour job so they'll take it to the dealer...

Yeah, next they will bring out parts that have to be specially 'coded' for the car to be able to accept it and all as a DEALER ONLY option........oh hang on..... :frown:

They where brilliant motors,
People called them to feck but they where easy to work on and cheap
No cam belt tensioner to worry about and they where reliable.

Unlike the shite they replaced the cavs with,
did you ever change a clutch on one Lozz ?? bout 20 minutes on the side of the road, no need to remove the gearbox, why didnt that catch on ??
No tbh, ialway took boxes out, mainly all the cavs I had where
The 1.6 4spd box,
I always bought a cav for its tin and thrown my own engine and box in
The 1.8 lump,
