(It's Richard btw, but good guess. My dad is Robert, which always caused no end of confusion with the post.)

Doesn't Highlander have a 2.2 in his coupe? Is it the same engine? Or retuned?

I got my scrap window off a 2.0 petrol 406, and it's astonishing how tiny they are!

There does look to be a bit more space round the 407. But looking is one thing, it's quite another when you try to actually put a spanner on something.

Isn't there an updated part for the ball joints? Or does it not fit on earlier models?

Current: 407 2.2 HDi 170 & C6 2.7 HDi.

As far as I am aware, it's the same engine - maybe with some different parts but essentially the same. Is his reliable - engine wise?

There is... but you need to replace the whole hub. And it's kinda cheaper to just replace the ball-joints on a semi-regular basis. Would become a bit of a ball-ache though.

I've got a saloon with the 2.2, engine code EW12J4. It's a solid dependable engine, will go 300K miles with very few issues, I get 31mpg and I like to give it the beans on occasion (it has a great growl!). Plenty of torque as well, because of the variable intake timing. It pulls harder than its peak performance figures would suggest, very flat torque curve.

You've got to keep an eye on the oil consumption, though, it likes to drink. Luckily 5W40 Total Quartz 9000 is both cheap and recommended by PSA.

The only difference I've found is that it has 158hp in the 406 and 163hp in the 407.

Why is everything cheaper oop noorth?

Mainly because of insurances prices, I thinks,
A lot of big cars are hard to sell. Alot carnt afford to insure them,

A lot of postcodes up north are on the hit list

why does the esp light come on if he's changed an abs sensor?? needs another sensor i guess

Yeah agree mate,

Still a cheap motor for what is tho,

I'm gutted I've spent my money. On the heap I've just bought. Or iwouid of been on it :(

So....what would you do? Say you went to see the car and it was as good as it looks in the pictures, comparable engine power to a remapped hdi, good service history etc. Would you buy it? Tax would double and insurance would be about £100 more. It would also eat more fuel... but petrol is slightly cheaper that diesel. Would it balance out though? Probably not.

I love my 406...it's a reliable workhorse, it has "soul" (for me). Clutch and cambelt are new and so are the brakes and tyres. Thete's nothing reslly that needs doing to it in the short to medium term. I've lived through a lot of things in my life in it so it has a sentimental value as well. That said, it has done 151000 miles so far and going up quickly. It's really rattly which is annoying and it's getting an old car smell...

Dilemma!!! Quietly hoping that I dont like it........

The 406's are difficult to part with, I always compared mine to a comfy old shoe (if that makes sense) mine had been quite troublesome for some reason, I had just about everything that good go wrong did go wrong :(

One thing though; if you were to change cars wouldn't you prefer to get something newer? yours is an 02? and this is an 04? it's not a huge leap forward? when I changed mine I got something 4 years old so the decision to change was easy as the new car was so much different.

That said, that 407 looks a good one and I think you'll be pleased with it and you should enjoy the difference from the 6 to the 7 (better ride/handling etc). Fuel economy will drop but not as badly as you might think - petrol engines warm up very quickly (if it's shortish runs you do mostly).

It's a difficult call as you've spent a fair bit on yours and, as you say, it shouldn't really want for much for a while....

That's a good guide waue, but motoring is not all about maths, more often we want a different/new car don't we?

If you don't do a lot of miles then Petrol can make sense, and, dare I say it; petrol engines are less trouble*

*don't let steve_earwig see that.

Same dilemma I have really.

You want the 407 but you don't need it.

So if you want the 407 more than you want keep admiring the money in your bank account, then get it and enjoy it! (Being a Yorksireman, I'm more inclined to keep the money.)

Just been to see it! And I am happy to announce that I'll be holding on to my beloved 406 and keeping what pennies I have in my savings.

Basically, it looks better in pictures than it is. In reality it looks like a er... well, a 9 year old car really! A couple of very minor dings here and there but nothing bad. A lot of scratches on the door handle (inside and out) - I am guessing the previous owner was a woman with long nails! The boot was OK but not as big as the 406's. Took us a while to figure out how to open it :oops: Sadly, it didn't have the JBL sound system but I have an app for that :D Front tyres are badly worn (bald) but these would be replaced with the MOT test before sale.

The engine looked OK. No leaks or anything out of the ordinary. Looks like plenty of space to work on the thing!

OK... Inside. Again, it looked a little aged but nothing serious - everything was very spacious and was kind of nice but I didn't feel that cocooned feeling I have in mine. The leather was in decent condition and all the electrics seemed to work. Perhaps it's due to the armrest that's different - not sure. Turned the ignition on - immediately saw that the mono display is knackered, a common issue on these. Scrolled through the menus quickly to find the average fuel consumption to be 26mpg :? The clutch - oh my... it was heavy! Mine feels like I can use a feather to depress it but this one required some work. Are they cable on these petrols?

The test drive. Oh dear. The engine itself is super quiet at idle and smooth - no rattles! Started without issues and idled without hiccups. But.... it's completely gutless. OK, it doesn't feel like it's being pushed by an asthmatic but it wasn't a patch on my remapped HDI. I really had to push it to accelerate at a decent pace - there certainly wasn't a whooaaah feeling when I floored the pedal. Near work, there's a long straight hill on which I know what my 406 is capable of and how quickly it gets to that speed (not long). On this petrol, I did manage to get to that speed ... eventually. Certainly not as quick and had to rev it quite a lot. Also, I had no idea what gear to be in. There are 6 of them here and the difference between 5 and 6 is virtually nothing. So... I didn't like the engine at all. I am sure it's a nice engine as far as petrols go but it wasn't powerful.

Other things... constant groaning and thudding from the rear - anti-roll bars? And, more worryingly, some really odd judder/vibration through the steering wheel when I made a sharp right turn into the car park. It might be the wonderful ball-joint but it wasn't a clunk. It was a continuous vibration for a second or so.

Overall, the car looks good despite its controversial styling and inside felt more premium and better built than the 406. I am not sure about the vast perceived space from the driver's point of view though...

So, would I get a 407? Maybe. If it was newer and in better condition and without the technical issues I've discovered so far. And a diesel.

Oh and one other thing. The tyre roar at about 80mph was awful! It was certainly louder in there at that speed than in mine. This probably due to 17" wheels vs 15" on mine, though. Had a similar "issue" on my Honda.
