Alloy refurb .....

Post by Sonia406 »

Anyone done an alloy refurb?
Been offered these for £120 (May try and haggle) but as you can see a few are scratched (and where is the valve on the bottom left one?)

Anyone done this? I've just spoken to a friend who basically said powder coating costs about £50 per wheel  or the cheaper option is to
1) use sandpaper to rough the whole thing up
2) use primer
3) use spray paint........... (I guess I could go ANY colour I wanted then........)

Ideas?

I did mine myself, although I made the mistake of buying ' silver ' paint, not ' Alloy Silver ' paint, so they look a bit dull.
I used one of those soap-filled pads to rub the wheels down, and the primer and spray and lacquer was £20 which was enough for all 4 wheels.
Take time to mask up the tyres properly and just give it a go..!!

£120 is too much for those wheels - all 4 valves are there, check the shadows, but the tyres are too small and will look silly in the 406 wheel arch. The last set of Cyclones I bought ( same as your picture ) cost me £40 with 4 excellent tyres. It seems these hold their price as look good on 306s.

I paid £51 for 5 starfish alloys in good nick with good tyres, just had to drive to Andover to get them.

Keep looking around, something else will pop up if you just bide your time... :cheesy:

120 is abit much for alloys needing refurb.
I've seen a few good sets on eBay cheap..

It ain't hard to re-paint wheels and you don't need alloy paint..
Met paint and lacquer does the job..

Plenty of lacquer and primer in the quid shops..

The wheels look like 206/306
Cyclones..

Might look lost on a 406. :?

I think Nimrods are the best looking wheels for the estate..

I'd agree totally with that one. For some reason Cyclones are expensive (& awkward to balance due to the centre-less hub). They don't look in bad condition for the £120, but if you've decided you're going to refurb & get a very clean looking set of wheels, you may as well get a set that look a bit more rough that'll cost you less. After all, you'll be spraying the whole wheel anyway, so you might as well save the money on the initial purchase. Plus the tyres will be a smidge too small.

Decent 15ins 406 wheels can be had for under £100 if you keep your eyes open. Corails are up-to-date, but a major kerbing risk where the spokes stick out. I've always liked the old Opale/Raven wheels. Nimrods are usually expensive.

If 5 spoke is your thing & you aren't overly fussed about tyre size, I've got a set of these ending on Ebay tomorrow:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/151039951467? ... 875wt_6150

A definite candidate for refurbing if you want mint, but the offset is bang on for a 406 & they have a normal hub mounting.

I really like your wheels... I did look at them earlier on eBay!
Are you going to let the auction run or since it's me... :D
How much would you want for them? You're not that far from me, only a mile or two more than the girls are from me.
Cheers

Thanks for all the advice peeps :D

Good god, you're as bad as my mate Dave - who offered me flowerly cushions.
What part of YOU makes you think I am into all that pink, girly sh*t?
I had the fright of my life when I looked in my cupboard the other week and found a PINK t-shirt
I don't like pink fluffy dice, anything pink actually, nor that flowerly bollocks...

I'd be looking at white, black or if I could a blue to match the paint of the car - but think that may be too much... and even then may not get a blue to completely match it..........

Think black is a very strong possibility...................... maybe do the centre caps blue?

I was recently thinking about refurbing my own alloys until I saw the following: http://forums.mg-rover.org/showthread.php?t=427081 (that guy needs a medal).

I think the answer is yes, it is possible, but to do it right takes a whole lotta time. If you have a spare set of wheels then have a go and take as long as you want but I wouldn't expect decent results over a quick weekend with a rattle can.

WOOSH! That was the point that was :supafrisk:

Paint them wheel silver/grey or black. Gold says "I wanned a Scooby Doo but I corrent afforded it :( ". Centre caps painted the same colour as the car says "'ickle boy wiv tin of paint but no ideas". Wheels painted completely the same colour as the car would look extremely wrong. All IMHO of course :cheesy:

When I was running (black) steels for the winter tyres on my 406 I was toying with the idea of painting them quartered black/yellow, crash test-style, but in the end I couldn't be bothered.

Speaking of little boys with tins of spray paint, all the bits of removable plastic in the Yoyo have been painted the same colour (metallic mid blue) as the outside by the previous idiot, it looks stupid to me but I just don't care enough to change it back. It also came with blue dome lamps and blue LED Chinese beads under the dash, it was like getting into a swimming pool  They got ripped out & binned very quickly.

Unfortunately due to the time left to run I can't end them early now, but feel free to have a bid. Couldn't answer any earlier as I'm working nights this week & only just got up.

I did wonder about posting them on here before listing along with the other bits I'm selling, but figured nobody would be interested in putting 306 wheels on a 406. How wrong I was as in the past 2 days I've seen 2 people posting about fitting Cyclones!

Personal crisis today, having to rush a kid to the doctors - Hope I am back in time to bid. :)
I think the 306 wheels are nicer than the 406 ones... but again like everything, it's personal choice :)
You do know if I win the bid you're going to have to meet the crazy lady

Did see that. Hope all is ok. I'm a nightmare if Jack gets ill.

No problem with meeting you, as long as you don't beat me with a stick for not owning a Pug anymore!
