Car Hypocondria

Post by Bailes1992 »

I found out a few days ago that the Direct Injection Lynx Ford diesel engines if not looked after correctley will destroy it's small end bearings!

Now I have a common rail version of this engine and there has been a few stories of people who's small end bearings have failed.

So now I have a major case of car hypcondria. Every noise, every rattle, every weird vibration is my engine breaking up into 5 million pieces.

Take today for instance.

I noticed when I let off the accelerator when on boost I got a loud "Cooo" from the turbo. I also noticed my engine sounded rough and unbalenced.
I convinced myself that a small end bearing had disintigrated and found it's way into the oil line for the turbo starving it and causing it to "Cooo".

I got home, give the car a good rev before remembering I have 2 massive holes in my exhaust

I think if a small end bearing failed to that extent there'd be no Cooo noise from anywhere just a big bang and a hole in the block where the conrod would have tried to escape.

A loud rattling noise, followed by a bang, shirley?

I think the word you're looking for is "paranoia", driving along thinking *oh no, XYZ's just about to happen". I think I've had that with almost ever car I've had. Well, every car that was worth anything anyway. Except the Yoyo of course, I think the exhaust's falling off now

It probably doesn't help reading all these forums, while you're reading all the horror stories you have to remember that they don't all go wrong...

I'm not paranoid about my car breaking down at all.

I do, of course, carry jump leads, towing bar, spare battery and lots of tools in the boot just in-case.... ahem...' someone else' breaks down :supafrisk:

Well, just to ease your mind....a small end bearing is not directly linked to an oil line, therefore IF it failed there would not be any debris in the turbo.

With a failed small end bearing you would get a loud tapping noise from the top end of the engine.

Small end failure is extremely rare.....I've only seen one case in 43 years!

Theres nothing wrong with my engine. It's sweet as a nut, pulls HARD and returns good economy. Just the exhuast is blowing!

Good to hear that small end bearing failure is rare mind! You hear of 5 cases and you start panicing! Forgetting how many Lynx engines have actually been produced over the years.

There is nozzles that spray the underside of the pistons (I don't know if this is how all engines are?) to help control the piston/cylinder tempretures and lubricate the small end bearing. My theory is these are getting blocked due to cheap filters and oil or bad service regiemes. Unfortunatley trying to prove this is hard work!

With great respect, I think you are not understanding what a small end bearing is.

The small end bearing is a copper/bronze bush on top of the con rod that the gudgeon pin fits into, usually the gudgeon pin is pressed into the bush through the piston.

The gudgeon pin is lubricated through holes and slots in the piston.

The hole in the conrod that oil sprays out of is for lubricating the thrust side of the bore and the thrust side of the piston skirt.

This 'problem' with these engines is most likely the result of lack of servicing rather than any fault as such. Some people never have the oil changed, for years sometimes :|
