Post by Bailes1992 »

Driving through Barry this evening doing about 35mph in a 40mph zone and a Gasto flashed twice at me.

Anything to worry about?

South Wales is the most driver unfriendly place I have ever driven in. Peppered with speed cameras *everywhere*, it's impossible to avoid one.

That said... 35 in a 40? Were you driving towards or away from it? Maybe some other car set it off...

I had a similar one quite a few years ago at Bythorn A14, eastbound. I was overtaking a truck that was doing probably 56, I was doing about 65, camera flashed.
I made a note of the truck's owners + reg. (thinking I might be able to get a witness) and rang plod soon as I got to work. After being passed from dept to dept, I finally got to speak to the 'Enforcement Unit'.

'Where was this, Sir'? ...... 'Oh, we're going out to that one in the next day or two - it's got no film in it'

Never heard any more about it.

Just re-read Sams post, you'll be fine. If it flashed behind you then the lines will identify your speed. If it flashed in front of you i.e. in your eyes, then someone else set it off.

FWIW I saw a ' standard ' police van park up yesterday, 2 pig... I mean 2 officers got out and stuck a pair of magnetic stickers on the rear doors, one door was the yellow camera sign and the other door was a plain black square so from a distance it looked like a speed trap van, sneaky beggars.

I've heard of speed cameras detecting the spokes in alloys moving beyond the speed limit and taking photos of cars saying "this car was going 300 MPH", even if it's only a 1.2 Golf or whatever. These photos get discarded so you never get fines/court summons for them.

I'm told there's one fixed camera in ZG but I've never seen it, instead there seem to be a lot of these "your speed is..." signs but I'm not sure if I'm supposed to be happy when they say I'm below the limit, thankyou, or if they tell me to slow down. I guess the latter works for the natives anyway

I'm still waiting for them to try and start mounting Gatsos everywhere but then I guess the Croats have something the Brits lack - guns

A bird or some debris flying past a gatso can set it off, that's nothing to worry about - the radar detection is only used to trigger the two flashes, and it's only by looking at the pictures and seeing how far you've travelled in the half second between the photos can your speed be accurately determined - a manual version of average speed cameras.

It's the bastards with the laser guns that are the worrying ones - no warning (because they hide the vans) and if they target your alloys and say you're doing 350mph in a 30, then you're going to get done for doing 350mph in a 30, and there's no actual evidence of your speed to refute other than the copper's word, which is gold in court...
