Good to see the forums are still active, miss coming on here and my old 406..my 307 estate 1.4 hdi's a slug & a boring Bas*a*d... no real mods for it... a remap would take me from 68 bhp to 89 Lol so wont bother...to date ive raced and beat a cyclist, tractor and a milk float...i have however added a wood trim set ...but its still dull. When i have finished my house renovation, and completely destroyed the 307 (my van) i might look at a 407? are they any good anyone? they look smaller inside (estate) than a 406? they seem cheapish to buy 2nd hand..maybe there's a reason?
saw my old 406, a builder bought it off me and the nice leather seats are total write offs as is the rest of the car inside & out, he hasn't serviced it for 2 years 40 k+ miles added, but wtf, it still runs nice and doesn't lose oil or water...its now done WELL over 300,000 miles!.406's are built too last for sure.. i remember reading somewhere that Peugeot developed the 406 to try and knock merc from being the top taxi supplier to europe which they had been for years, and the 406 did this and im not surprised.

Re: How is everyone? ...
Hi Dave, nice to hear from you again.
A 1.4 HDi 307 does sound a bit glacial, driven my daughter's 1.6 petrol 307 a few times and doesn't seem to threaten rice pudding skins, so I can imagine. Still I bet it's economical.
There's been a few recent defections to 407's but as yet no estates. rwb and Captian Jack have both recently got twin turbo 2.2 HDi GTs and jasper5's had a 2.0 HDi saloon for some, (plus of course trem1, but he would gave had a 407 last time you were around).
The load area of a 407 estate is definitely shorter than a 406's, but whether this stops it being a proper estate is probably in the eye of the beholder. What comments we've seen on reliability are pretty positive, but it's early days, (at least for us).
I undestand other forums are available, (& generaly make you appreciate this one)!

Re: How is everyone? ...
Guilty as charged.
The 2.0 136 or laterly 140 is the sensible engine to go for in the 407. The 2.2 is purely for my amusement
The front feels bigger, the back feels smaller, and the boot smaller too.
68hp dragging round a 307 sounds like hard work. I think that's less power to weight than the 406 with 90hp.

Current: 407 2.2 HDi 170 & C6 2.7 HDi.
Former: 406 1.9 TD; 406 HDi 90; 407 2.2 160; 307cc 180; 508 HDi 140.

As much as I agree with that I think the reason it's lasted so long is because of the great care YOU gave it. I'm not sure how long you had it but if you treat them right in the beginning they tend not to fail easily..... That's my thoughts anyway...wasp wrote:Good to see the forums are still active, miss coming on here and my old 406..my 307 estate 1.4 hdi's a slug & a boring Bas*a*d... no real mods for it... a remap would take me from 68 bhp to 89 Lol so wont bother...to date ive raced and beat a cyclist, tractor and a milk float...i have however added a wood trim set ...but its still dull. When i have finished my house renovation, and completely destroyed the 307 (my van) i might look at a 407? are they any good anyone? they look smaller inside (estate) than a 406? they seem cheapish to buy 2nd hand..maybe there's a reason?

I wouldn't go near the 307's or 407's.wasp wrote:Good to see the forums are still active, miss coming on here and my old 406..my 307 estate 1.4 hdi's a slug & a boring Bas*a*d... no real mods for it... a remap would take me from 68 bhp to 89 Lol so wont bother...to date ive raced and beat a cyclist, tractor and a milk float...i have however added a wood trim set ...but its still dull. When i have finished my house renovation, and completely destroyed the 307 (my van) i might look at a 407? are they any good anyone? they look smaller inside (estate) than a 406? they seem cheapish to buy 2nd hand..maybe there's a reason?

From reading here, it seems to me that older ones just get much the same gremlins as the 406.
Also, from reading the reviews on 'Parkers Guide' site, there are various references, as I recall,
to not brilliant handling, lack of driving feel.
Or as I heard Jeremy Clarkson say on some recent Top Gear, "Peugeot have made cars for old men for the last xx years..."
My 406 handles great, plenty of driving feel, really enjoyable.
Oddly, in this country, I remember Citroen BX19 RD's , and Peugeot 405 Diesels being hugely popular with taxi drivers.
Not so much with 406's. Maybe I just wasn't looking.
