Hi Captain Jack. I am a newbie to the 407oc so now is the time to post a reply [while people make allowances' as i am a newbie. lol )

You know,over the years the best buys i have had in s/h cars were oldish ones that had cost their owners a bomb over a short period of time. The way i have looked at it was that a car a few years old and with the mileage mounting is always going to need things doing to it. For some reason the engine seems to be the only item people worry about when they see an odometer approaching 6 figure's. Very often someone will buy a car like yours and get years of trouble free driving out of it as the last owner had kindly replaced most of the parts that were nearing the end of their service life.

I am slightly surprised that you intend replacing your 406 with a 407. not wishing to offend any 407 owner but the 407 has not exactly got a good reputation for reliability.
Yes guys, i know 'your' one has clocked up a big mileage trouble free ~ but a heck of a lot of them have not ! My next door neighbour who is a keen caravaner and had years of trouble free towing with three 406's in a row so, like you, considered a 407 his obvious next car. He got a carefully vetted one and 3 times in a year his car and caravan were returned home courtesy of the AA, at which stage he called quits and sold it, the car that is not the caravan. A friend of mine is a long serving mechanic at our local Peugeot dealership and he reckons the 407 is the best car Peugeot have made in the last 20 years - for the mechanics! Keeps them employed. (Actually that is not quite what he said as i prefer not to use strong language in print. lol )

Well, the reason I went for the Peugeot, rather than another make, is simply down to the fact that you get a hell of a lot for your money as well as that I will be familiar with the 407 in general, having worked on the 406 quite a lot. I am well aware of the problems that a 407 may have - clutch seems to be the weak point, but the rest will be fairly easy to do. Suspension stuff etc. The engine in that is, as far as I am aware, quite reliable. I've never heard of any problems on either the 406's 2.2L HDI units (ignoring the FAP issues) or the 407's twin turbo one. Electrical stuff can be a worry but a lot of people are now armed with a dealer-level diagnostics equipment, myself included, so it's no longer a money drain it used to be.

Likewise, didn't all the people rave on about the Japanese cars and how reliable they are? Please don't ask me about my Honda diesel as I have moaned enough about it.

Fact is some things a reliable some arent, it can be down to how it was looked after from new.Doesnt matter what make/model etc

Where does it say 407s are any more unreliable than any other car? Not if you actually read anything they aint. I reckon he's been listening to many "blokes down the pub"

Both the 406 and 407 are top rate bits of kit.
They're also the most sophisticated piece of machinery that you own -- by a long way -- and it's naive to think that it should work like an appliance.

We're here because if we're realistic. We expect problems, and if we don't already have one then we want learn from others' experience about what to watch and listen out for, things to check, and preventive measures we could take,...
At CJ & my price point we know, understand, and expect that clutches and cam belts are going to be on the cards and we've factored that in.

Is this effort an unreasonable expectation of car owners? I think this idea that a car is an appliance is unreasonable.

And if the 407s you're talking about are 1.6 HDis then frankly what do you expect from putting a Ford engine in a Peugeot? IMHO it's a crap engine.

This 1.6hdi frod engine in the 407 is it the one that would be in an 09 berlingo?

my mate at work has a ford focus c max with the 1.6hdi engine in it, full service and only 70,000 miles.
driving back from scotland the other day and the engine ran away and has destroyed the engine and turbo, looks like the car will be scrapped, to many horror stories with the 1.6 engine.
