HELP!! Unsolvable electrical problem

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

HELP!! Unsolvable electrical problem

Post by heirpin »

Hi, I'm posting on behalf of a work colleague as he doesn't have a pc (sorry,he's old!)

He's currently faced with scrapping a loveley 406 Executive W reg as it has developed an electrical fault which means the hazards won't work and several warning lights have come up on the dash (but no faults are there to cause them to light up!). A mechanic friend and a garage have both looked at it and diagnosed the problem as a moisture based corrosion of three multi plug connectors down by the drivers seat area. They've tried to bypass the plugs but have now given up after spending many hours looking at it so he is faced with either taking it to a Peugeot dealer for a re-wire (probably not economical considering the value of the car?) or scrapping it as the MOT has just run out

I said I'd see if I could find any info on the 'net so here I am. Hopefully someone has come across this problem before and can give some advice

Oh, he did mention that the wires are not very well colour-coded so diagnosis/repair is tricky to say the least!!

Thanks for looking

Jim

Hello. Yes, it's happened a few times, it can usually be sorted out with patience (and if it's not been messed up too much by meddling kids...) Have a look at this: viewtopic.php?f=10&t=12118&p=107150&hilit=crazy#p107150

It may (or may not) help to know Peugeot don't "do" colour codes, the wires are actually numbered near the connectors.

I actually thought a 2000 (W reg, yes? I'm a bit out of touch with that sort of thing) would be too early for this (ahem) issue. Any chance you could post the chassis number?

An independent auto sparky would be a MUCH better option than a dealer. The dealer solution to this would be to replace both (very expensive) harnesses - major job (complete strip-down of the interior including dashboard removal I think) with major labour costs - several times the value of the car
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

Yes, that's what he's been advised to do by the garage he took it to!!

I've told him about the clean up fix but he informed me today the connectors were that bad they were cut off so now he's asking if we can get hold of that section of the wiring diagram so does anyone have it or can point me in the general direction of where I can find it please?

Thanks

So all he has now are bunches of wires, brilliant

Trouble is there are no colour codes, without the wire codes the only way of doing it was to carefully pick the connectors apart wire by wire.

Yeh, soinds like a right nightmare!!! I haven't seen it for myself but that's what he told me anyhow!!

I've found this http://peugeot.mainspot.net/wiring406/p8c.shtml#5 but that can't be the complete wiring diagram surely (I'm no electrical expert!)

As far as I can make out these are the connectors under the fuse panel:

Not where I was expecting to see them but I can't see anything else that looks likely.

For which connectors this is the diagram

Without the chassis number I've had to make a lot of guesses about the car but this will be close. It'll be worthless without the codes anyway :(
