Down the scrap yard

Work that needs doing for MOT:
- 2 front tyres
- track rod end at the rear
- handbrake freeing off
- handbrake adjusting
- new brake disks and pads all around
- Reconnecting horn pads in the steering wheel
- steering rack gaitors



And todays fault that reared it's ugly head:





Took it to my MOT tester and asked his advice.
Also told him the clutch is slipping badly (not all the time but enough)

His honest advice to me was to scrap it


So, who gives you the best price for scrap cars?

BOTH 406s have had ABS issues - this is beyond a bloody joke.

It came on as I was doing 70mph on a local dual carriageway. Arrived at my destination and turned it off, turned it over and within a minute it beeped up. Again, off and on - 1 minute later beep.
Started it 2 more times for journeys in the town I was in - still beeped up.

Started it up to come home when I finished my jobs and I got home without it re-appearing.......


Charging diagnostics laptop (when I can find the bloody cable) will check out the ABS status... I did PP2000 when I got it and the ABS was clear as a whistle......

Me and RWB were having a chat this morning and he had a theory that because the handbrake is seizing on that maybe the ABS speed sensor thought hang on a minute, this wheel is slower than the other wheel and it flagged up that way - but that doesn't account for it stationary and beeping up at me....

Can't find laptop charge cable

PP2000 is all in one place so what have I done with the charger

Hmm, I think the wheel must be moving at the same speed as the other wheels - the alternative implies that the tyre is slipping against the road surface which I don't think can be possible (not without you noticing, anyway). The 406 handbrakes are notoriously crap anyway. That said, the two could still be connected.

The fault on the screen and the "bleep" don't necessarily happen as soon as the fault registers. Often, faults have to trigger a certain number of times within a certain period, before the ECU registers a fault. See what Planet says

I said to my mot inspector, I strongly suspected even if I had all this work done it's the type of car that I would expect a fail from.
I say I scrap both in the new year and get a different model - leave the 406s behind.... I did diagnostics when I got the damn thing and the abs was fault free! Grrrrr - just so angry!!

I see where you're coming from, but there's always an element of "better the devil you know". The ABS fault might turn out to be a simple fix, and I seem to remember in your other thread, the other things are service items and therefore certainly fixable.

The 2.2HDis are really good engines, it'll make a very reliable car once you've got the niggles fixed Ours is approaching 210,000 miles now!

I put it in safe keeping in the moses basket

On charge, will be doing diagnostics as soon as I get back, about 5pm! Will post screenshots

Sonia, all those items in your list up top are easily fixed. They'll cost you a little money of course, but they aren't terminal.
The new ABS fault could be as simple as a dodgy connector (as in Miss Pug) or a failed sensor....neither of which is anything to get in a stir about.

The slipping clutch however is a different kettle of fish. I have mine to do sometime in the new year probably and I'm not looking forward to it. That gearbox is heavy!

Was the clutch showing signs of slipping when you bought it? Sorry if that's already been covered in your Miss Pug thread but I can't be ar**d to go over and read it all!

At the end of the day though, if you're not in love with the car, just move it on......'cos it'll never love you back.

The problem I have is that Miss Pugs caused me enough bloody headache over the ABS - to which I never did get on top of!
It was my re-map that killed the clutch... Clutch was okay plodding along with a clogged DPF...

I need to get a 505 estate....... 8 seats would be ideal anyhow.......
