Audi A4 Not starting

Post by FarmerPug »

My cousin (another one) bought a 2003 Audi A4 3.0 V6 Quattro which snapped its timing belt and put a conrod through the engine block, another v6 engine was bought for £1000 and he put it in, but the car will not start. The rest of the car is immaculate.

It has a DSG gearbox, and some sensor or device seems to have got burnt and damaged, here it is:

The car does not seem to know what gear its in (the lcd screen in the instrument cluster doesn't show if its PRND etc) and i suspect because it doesn't know if its in park it won't start, what would this part be called?

That looks very similar to the selector switch fitted to the 4HP20 auto box on the Coupes.
It's fitted on splines from the box and it's this that the selector lever in the car moves. It is a multi-contact switch that not only prevents starting in any position except Park and Neutral, but tells the valves in the hydraulic block how to open and close.

This is it on the 4HP20.

At the moment the car doesn't even so much as give a click when the key is turned but every other electrical thing turns on

I don't think it will with this switch out of circuit. This is what it does on the 4HP20 box

Automatics shouldn't even crank the starter unless they're in neutral or park so that's probably a lot of what's going on there.

That does look rather fried, I wonder what else went with it :(

I wonder if you can get the sensor/lead separately? I think I'd try an Auto-gearbox specialist first, breakers maybe and then the mother of all phone calls.......the Audi Dealership

Let us know how you get on.

That's a weird looking plug on the end of that last one Steve. Nothing seems to be holding the pins in place, does it..... :?:

Ive sent a few emails to breakers, what i need is the switch but also the plug socket for it with a bit of wires on the end to solder it into place, my cousin tried to wire it back up as it is but the colours of the wires do not match up.

Becareful. if your trying to take any gamble of soldering wires,
you may end up needing a new ecu, :(

not cheaper either theyd be over 1500notes,. or few hundread quid from a specialist breaker,

He doesn't want to solder anything as it sits, the wires on the car side are one set of colours and the wire on the plug side are another and they don't seem to match.
Is there a servicbox, or similar for audis, i tried to find more information on an audi forum but presumably they are too busy tailgating other motorists to respond :cheesy:
