I want to ask but I don't.........

Post by Sonia406 »

It's one of those topics where I want to ask your advice but you never know whose watching

Has anyone here had a guaranteed pass TOM (backwards)

I've been offered one in January, I certainly wouldn't be overly happy in driving the car with the brakes as they are up to Jasper5, it would make sense to me to renew the TOM, do the brakes after Christmas THEN take it up to Jasper5 to sort out.....

Would also give me a chance to save up for parts, the DMF I believe is £300 at the least....

Thoughts?

You should think of it this way Sonia......
What if that hooky TOM station issued a hooky TOM to someone who doesn't view, for example, brakes, as conscientiously as you do.....and you and the kids were in your car coming the other way.....need I go on....
Far from using them, you should damn well shop them.

Hmmm but if I have to take up there before the TOM expires (6th Jan) there's absolutely no way I can afford to do the brakes beforehand, which then means driving a car with no horn (or at best a very temperamental one) and a car that brakes are in a very bad way.....

I've been told it is a guaranteed pass....... it buys me time to save up money for all the parts and the train tickets and the fuel getting up there and back..... that's all.......

Don't do it. In fact, I'd be sorely tempted to get that "guarantee" in writing and shop them in. That test is there to ensure cars are safe to be on the roads (for at least one day a year, anyway ) - circumventing this is a really, really bad idea. Who knows what genuinely unsafe cars this crook has signed off - cut 'n' shuts? Fred Flintstone cars? Ones with serious airbag faults, or possibly even dangerous fuel lines or electrical issues? Maybe the guy also charges for stuff like timing belt changes, and doesn't actually do them? Who's to know? I wouldn't trust him as far as I could spit him.

DMF is a bugger right enough, but that's about making the car go. Concentrate on getting the car to stop, every time. Get that sorted out first, even locally (without worrying about trekking up to Jasper to get it done), and then worry about the DMF.

You could also check over at the Coupe Club forums to see if anyone there with a 2.2 HDi Coupe and is handy with the spanners lives locally to you. They're mechanically identical to your car, after all. Might be someone close by who can come round to you to get the worst of these things sorted out, in exchange for some beer or something.

The guy I use has been known to let me off dodgy bulbs and alike with a stern 'sort that out' but as stated you really need to know the thing is mechanically sound whether you keep it or sell it on.
Imagine how you'd feel if it caused an accident due to a defect that should have been picked up.
Brakes, steering and suspension first - making it go fast is second

Having independant toms here cuts out on all that malarky i know ive failed on silly things like out of alignment bulbs but im glad it is as strict as it is the end result is properly looked over cars, i would not advise driving the car with an improper tom on it.

Whats actually wrong with the brakes on your car are they worn down or is it an abs issue?

At the moment, all disks and pads need replacing, handbrake is temperamental, sometimes it will hold, sometimes it needs adjusting and sometimes its seizing on even in motion.

At the end of the day right, it's not as if I am saying I won't be doing the jobs - it just buys me some time to get it up there but by doing the brakes first, to ensure on the journey up there - I can stop.

Many people are driving around illegal cars anyway, ones who have de-catted, and even those who have (like myself) removed the DPF.
Just because the canister is there, legally they both should have the filters in....

And if we're going to get all - this is serious stuff, think about all the extra toxic stuff in the air we breath due to many a cars being tampered with with their cats or DPF's.......

Just sayin'

That's got be the lamest excuse for a reason to do it i have ever heard  supposing
you were driving around and someone drove into you only to find out they had a dodgy
tmo which means void insurance leaving you to claim off yours and the following hike in
premium , would you be happy ? Why not go the whole way and get him to sort you a
dodgy full license as well . and on a diesel its a smoke test not emissions ...

How do you expect people to react when only last week you told us you were advised to scrap it?

Think of it this way, what if (and god forbid it never happens) your brakes failed when you have your 14 kids in the car and one of them gets hurt?

Leave it Sonia it's your luck that you'd get pulled anyway.

I meant to put something similar in my post, I'm not having a go tbh just putting a horrible thought out there for her... Many moons ago i thought about this myself until my uncle said (Oi you take kids in that car don't do it)

Few weeks later i found out his Cavalier had a dodgy one  But still he got the point across to me.
